Miley Cyrus has shared insights into why she keeps the dress she wore on her first date with her former husband, Liam Hemsworth.
The singer, currently in a relationship with drummer Maxx Morando, discussed the sentimental value of certain outfits in an interview with Vogue, as part of her promotion for a Maybelline collaboration.
During the interview, Cyrus talked about her collection of outfits, awards, and memorabilia accumulated over the years, which she refers to as a ‘legacy rack.’ This collection includes ‘a couple of looks from every era that [she] would want to be remembered.’
She elaborated, “My eras, they’re not a costume, they’re actually like a metamorphosis or a true evolution for me personally.”
One significant era includes her relationship with Hemsworth, whom she met on the set of The Last Song in 2009.
Their relationship saw ups and downs, with an engagement in 2012 followed by a split in 2013. However, they reconciled and were engaged again in 2016, eventually marrying in 2018. The marriage ended when Hemsworth filed for divorce in August 2019.
Despite their tumultuous history, Cyrus emphasizes that she cherishes these memories rather than erasing them.
Speaking about preserving these moments, she said, “I literally have a dress that I had on when I met my ex-husband, and then I have my dress that I wore on our first date along with letters and things that I really, I want to savor these kind of beautiful moments of my life, but because these intimate moments have also been public moments, it’s a little bit tough to decide what piece I want to share and what I would ever allow to be seen.”
Cyrus added, “These things that are analog, they really are forever, and that’s something that I’ve also loved about working with Maybelline. It’s a household name. It’s so iconic and it is embedded into all these eras that I love and I really honor.”
After her breakup with Hemsworth, Cyrus began dating Morando in 2021, after meeting via a blind date.
Despite a six-year age difference, Cyrus told Harper’s Bazaar in 2024 that they are ‘very similar.’
She shared, “We just don’t take life too seriously.”
