Expert discusses advantages of ‘shallowing’ intimacy trend with 84% of women experiencing ‘enhanced pleasure’

The bedroom is abuzz with a sex trend known as shallowing, believed to enhance pleasure and reduce stress during intimate moments.

Although the term shallowing has been around for some time, recent research from the Indiana University School of Medicine has brought it back into the limelight.

In a study involving more than 4,000 women, ranging in age from 18 to 93, an impressive 84 percent reported experiencing ‘increased pleasure’ from this technique, which explains why many are eager to try it out.

So, what does shallowing entail? It involves gently stimulating the entrance of the vagina using fingers, a toy, a penis, or even through oral play.

This approach contrasts with deeper penetration by emphasizing teasing and building arousal at the opening, which many believe fosters a unique kind of intimacy.

Rachel Bartee from Your Coffee Break has outlined the advantages of this trend, noting that one major benefit is reducing the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Bartee elaborates that shallowing emphasizes the necessity of using a condom before any penetration, minimizing STI risks associated with pre-ejaculate or small tears.

“Condoms remain the gold standard in STI prevention, and the ‘Dip the tip’ method, when combined with proper condom use, ensures extra precaution during the most sensitive initial moments of contact,” she wrote.

She also suggests that shallowing enhances ‘awareness of consent’, as the slower pace can help ‘foster deeper connection’ between partners.

Additionally, it is said to promote sexual wellness in men by encouraging mindfulness of their bodies and sensations. Slowing down can also help reduce the likelihood of premature ejaculation.

Moreover, the technique can offer ‘enhanced comfort’ for all parties, with Bartee noting, “Particularly for those who experience discomfort during penetration, Shallowing offers a gentler start.”

Sex expert Annabelle Knight has also shared insights on avoiding injuries when trying out different sexual positions.

Speaking on behalf of Lovehoney, she advised: “Placing a pillow under the lumbar spine can reduce back injuries or flare-ups. It may also help increase pleasure during penetration.

“If the individual on top finds they have discomfort in their knees during this position, moving to a standing position whilst the receiver is on the bed may avoid this.

“Changing how close you are to your lover’s body may make it easier or harder for you and reduce muscle fatigue – it’s all about experimenting!”
