On Wednesday morning, October 1, the fire service responded to a reported gas explosion at a 20-story apartment building in the Bronx.
Upon their arrival in Mott Haven shortly after 8 am, fire officials discovered that an incinerator shaft within the building had given way.
Images shared by the Fire Department on social media depicted a substantial hole extending down one corner of the Mitchel Houses.
Fortunately, there have been no injuries reported at the location, 205 Alexander Avenue.
The New York City Emergency Management has verified that emergency teams are “conducting an interagency response to a partial building collapse” at the specified address.
“FDNY operations continue. NYPD is on scene for site security and enforcement of street closures. Con Edison Gas has shut gas utility to the impacted building.”
The statement also mentioned: “A community center at Alexander Avenue has been set up as a temporary shelter. MTA buses have been warranted for sheltering. “Please seek alternate routes if traveling to the area and follow all instructions from emergency personnel.”
New York Mayor Eric Adams provided an update through Twitter, saying: “New Yorkers, I have been briefed about the emergency situation taking place in the Mott Haven area of the Bronx.
“We are getting a full assessment from first responders and will continue to provide updates. Please avoid the area for your safety.”
Further details will be provided as the situation develops.
