Taylor Swift shared details about a specific topic she chose to steer clear of while delivering a speech at her close friend Selena Gomez’s wedding.
Their friendship dates back to 2008 when they met through connections with the Jonas Brothers.
At the time, Swift was dating Joe Jonas, while Gomez was involved with Nick Jonas.
Gomez once remarked that their friendship “was the best thing we got out of those relationships,” during an interview with KISS FM UK in 2017.
Today, their bond remains strong, with both women successfully navigating their personal lives.
On September 27, Gomez married music producer and songwriter Benny Blanco in a grand ceremony in Santa Barbara, California.
The couple exchanged vows after two years of dating, having gotten engaged 18 months prior.
Swift was in attendance to celebrate the occasion and was selected to deliver a speech at the wedding.
The singer is currently enjoying the success of her twelfth album, The Life of a Showgirl, and her recent engagement to NFL player Travis Kelce.
The couple got engaged after Swift appeared on Kelce’s New Heights podcast on August 13, just over six weeks before Gomez and Benny’s wedding.
During the October 6 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Swift revealed she had a specific guideline to adhere to while giving her speech.
Many are familiar with viral moments where people announce engagements or pregnancies at weddings.
Swift was determined not to become one of those instances.
While speaking to Fallon, she praised Gomez: “I got to see her be the most elegant, gorgeous, not only bride, but just vision that I’ve ever seen in my life.
I’ve never seen anything so beautiful as her on her wedding day. And she deserves all of this happiness.”
She added: “I did make a speech, but I actually made a point not to mention anything about my engagement.
“Nobody wants you to be like, ‘Hey, I know this is your wedding day, but like,’” she continued, playfully gesturing to her engagement ring.
Fallon chimed in: “It’s not about you!” with Swift agreeing: “Maybe turn it around. Do you know what I mean?”
However, Swift did include some light-hearted teasing about the fashion trends of 2008.
She reminisced about “quite the year,” mentioning “deep, deep v-necks” and “aggressively colorful skinny jeans.”
“Selena’s fave outfit was a long tank top, skinny jeans, and a tiny little vest,” Swift recalled.
She concluded by expressing her gratitude for her friendship with Gomez and for being part of her life, ensuring the focus remained on Gomez’s special day.
