Generation Z and millennials have embraced a new travel trend that is significantly reducing expenses for Americans.
Influencers on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube frequently showcase their travel experiences, leading to the emergence of new trends within the travel sector.
Recently, some members of Gen Z and millennials have pursued a novel approach called ‘microretirement’. This involves taking a break from their careers to journey around the globe.
The 2026 Travel Trends Report by Skyscanner provides insights into how people plan to travel in the coming year.
Researchers at the travel website analyzed data from over 20,000 travelers to understand global travel patterns and identified seven trends likely to shape travel in 2026.
One trend, ‘Family Miles – The Family Trend’, encourages travelers to bond with family while experiencing diverse cultures and cuisines worldwide.
“Multi-generational travel is on the rise – not just to share costs, but to reclaim time together and create long-lasting memories between parents, kids and grandparents,” according to Skyscanner.
Their research indicates that 51% of Gen Z have traveled with their parents in recent years, while 22% of millennials have taken flights alongside both their children and parents.
Spending quality time with family on trips is beneficial, but Skyscanner discovered that over one-quarter of Gen Z adults travel with family primarily to save money or split travel expenses.
At a recent event in London, Naomi Hahn, Skyscanner’s Vice President of Data, shared, “41 per cent of travelers are saying they are prioritizing family this year in terms of their holiday and some of the multi-generational trips. 60 per cent of them are talking about making memories, but the thing that I love is that 20 per cent are doing it to save costs.”
The trend of cost-saving through group or family travel is evident.
In addition to economic advantages, Gen Z and millennials are motivated by the chance to create memories and strengthen bonds with family during vacations, as highlighted in the report.
