R&B Icon D’Angelo Passes Away at 51

Renowned American musician and producer D’Angelo has passed away at the age of 51, as confirmed by his family.

In a statement shared with Variety, they expressed: “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life…After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, October 14th, 2025.

“We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

The celebrated singer’s passing was attributed to pancreatic cancer, as reported by TMZ on Tuesday (October 14).

Online tributes for the beloved artist have begun to appear, including messages from acclaimed record producer DJ Premier and Marc Lamont Hill.

Hailed as a neo-soul pioneer by Red Bull Music Academy, D’Angelo, originally from Virginia, released three studio albums. His discography includes his debut album Brown Sugar from 1995, followed by his second album, Voodoo.

D’Angelo’s third and final album, Black Messiah, was released through RCA Records and features 12 tracks, including ‘Really Love’, his first official single since 2008’s ‘I Found My Smile Again’.

Black Messiah reached the top position on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and US Indie Store Album Sales Charts, and ranked fifth on the US Billboard 200.
