The family of a 35-year-old man who was discovered deceased in a bayou in Houston has come forward as a series of similar cases raise fears about a possible serial killer.
Anthony Curry’s body was found in the Meyerland area bayou on May 17, at 7:42 a.m. local time. His case is one of numerous instances where individuals have been discovered in Houston bayous in recent months.
According to a report from Click2Houston, up to 23 bodies have been retrieved from marsh waters in the Harris County region this year. Within this time frame, the Houston police have verified 16 bayou deaths in their jurisdiction.
The most recent discovery occurred on October 8, when a dive team retrieved a male body from the White Oak Bayou at Marie Street.
The causes of death for some individuals recovered from the water have been released, though several remain pending.
The notable number of similar cases has led to speculation and rumors suggesting a single person might be responsible for these deaths. However, Houston mayor John Whitmire has dismissed these theories.
“We do not have any evidence that there is a serial killer loose in Houston, Texas,” he stated.
Curry’s death was ruled an accidental drowning, with PCP and ethanol detected in his system during the examination.
Following the discovery of Curry’s body, his sister, Alexis Curry, is seeking answers.
“That ain’t my brother,” she expressed to Click 2 Houston. “He’ll go somewhere and chill off before he just go jump in some water.”
Alexis described her brother as her ‘superhero’ and expressed her confusion over how his body ended up in the bayou.
“I really want to know what happened,” she stated.
Alexis noted that Curry worked as a barber and also had experience in construction. He resided with his girlfriend, just a short distance from where his body was discovered, and had a six-year-old son.
“He is my big brother, and he would’ve done anything for anybody,” Alexis said. “For him to be found like that, it hurts. It hurts.”
She mentioned that the last time she heard from Houston investigators was in July and that the family is still awaiting a detailed timeline of events. Alexis last communicated with her brother a few days prior to the discovery of his body, which was reportedly found with only his shorts on.
UNILAD has contacted the Houston Police Department for further comment.
