Snoop Dogg recently addressed criticism for a comment perceived as ‘homophobic’ regarding a children’s film, using it as an opportunity for growth.
To understand the situation, let’s look at what Snoop said in August that sparked backlash from the LGBTQ+ community.
During an appearance on the It’s Giving podcast, the rapper, soon to turn 54 on October 20, expressed apprehension about going to the movies. He recounted his grandson’s questions about a relationship in Lightyear, the Toy Story spin-off released in 2022.
He stated: “They’re putting it everywhere […] They’re like, ‘she had a baby – with another woman’. Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’
“I didn’t come in for this s***. I just came to watch the goddamn movie.”
He further commented: “Y’all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don’t have an answer for.”
The remarks led to accusations of homophobia, drawing significant criticism towards the rapper.
In response, Snoop Dogg is now working on a children’s song titled ‘Love Is Love’.
Partnering with GLAAD [Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation], he is advocating for LGBTQ+ representation as part of its annual Spirit Day, following the criticisms related to Lightyear.
On his YouTube channel, Snoop had a conversation with Jeremy Beloate, an openly queer artist and former contestant on The Voice signed to Snoop’s Death Row Records.
Snoop emphasized, “It’s a beautiful thing that kids can have parents of all walks [of life], and be able to be shown love, and be able to be taught what love is,” highlighting the message of his new campaign.
He discussed the idea that both hate and love are taught, underscoring the significance of celebrating love, “whether it’s two fathers, two mothers, whatever it is, love is the key.”
He added: “I think these kids are being loved by these great parents [who] are showing them an example of what family is. So, I wanna give a shoutout to all of the parents out there for doing such a great job with these kids.”
With seven grandchildren, Snoop Dogg expressed his desire to make a positive impact through his music.
“I have the opportunity to teach these kids through my music,” he concluded.
