A medical professional has highlighted a critical symptom of colon cancer that should not be overlooked, following the untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman from the illness in 2020.
The beloved actor, known for his role as Black Panther, passed away at the age of 43, leaving his fans worldwide in shock and mourning, as he had kept his battle with cancer private.
“Chadwick was a true fighter who persevered through it all and gave you many of the films you have come to love so much,” stated his family in a public announcement.
“From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and several more – all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.”
There is often a misconception that cancer primarily affects older individuals, but the experiences of Boseman and many others demonstrate that this is not exclusively the case.
Early detection is crucial for diseases like colon cancer, which necessitates awareness of potential symptoms.
In a YouTube video released shortly after Boseman’s passing, Dr. Jen Caudle noted that a ‘change in bowel habits’ is often the initial sign of colon cancer.
“That’s when you have a certain type of bowel movement that [happens] every day, and now all of a sudden you’re constipated… or have diarrhea,” explained the health expert.
If your bowel habits deviate from what is typical for you, it may be time to consult with a doctor.
Additionally, the size and shape of your stool can indicate potential issues.
“Size and shapes matter when we talk about stools. If your stools become more narrow, or skinny, or a different shape that’s something to take note of as well, and you’ve got to talk to a doctor if that occurs,” added Dr. Caudle.
Colon cancer remains a significant concern in the United States, with projections of 152,810 new cases of colorectal cancer being diagnosed in 2024, and around 53,000 fatalities due to the disease.
It stands as the third most common cancer diagnosis and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the country.
