Woman who crafts intimate scenes for a living explains how they differ from porn

A woman who specializes in writing sex scenes has highlighted the distinct difference between her work and pornographic material.

Jaimee Bell is an author for the audio erotica app Bloom Stories. This platform caters to a wide range of sexual fantasies, including a recent project by Jaimee that involved creating a more provocative version of Pride & Prejudice for an audiobook.

Jaimee emphasizes that her work is designed to ’empower others to explore their sexuality safely,’ a mission she considers ‘important’ to her personal and professional values.

“The content we’re creating at Bloom Stories gives people permission to explore their fantasies, likes and dislikes in a safe and ethical space,” she explained to Mirror Online.

When discussing her sources of inspiration, Jaimee mentions that it primarily comes from the users of Bloom Stories.

“Inspiration comes from everywhere. We’re led by user preferences – the topics, themes and tropes we see consistently performing well,” she noted.

“We’re also led by user fantasies. Users can submit ideas via our app and website, and we’ll often use these as starting points for stories,” she continued.

So, how do Jaimee’s audiobooks differ from traditional porn? She believes her work avoids unrealistic portrayals.

“This is in contrast to traditional visual porn, which tends to feature unrealistic portrayals of sex and of what ‘sexy’ people look like,” Jaimee stated, further explaining: “At Bloom Stories, we aim to create inclusive, realistic erotic content that isn’t created for the male gaze.”

In addition, adult film director Erika Lust discusses the distinction between unsimulated sex scenes in films and pornography.

In an interview, Erika once shared: “What happens with film or independent film etc when there’s some sort of sexual simulation or no simulation is that it’s not made to excite you – somehow.”

“The goal is not porn, it’s not to turn you on – maybe you get turned on by watching it but it’s kind of more than that.”

“And for me, I think it’s very exciting when directors dare to throw sex into the evolution of a character.”

It’s fair to say that typical porn lacks significant character development.

While some pornographic content is criticized for being unrealistic, watching adult films with a partner can enhance intimacy.

Emily Conway, CEO of intimacy brand Dragon Toys, believes the impact depends on the type of content consumed.

“There’s a common misconception that all porn damages relationships, but that’s simply not true when it’s approached with intention,” Emily remarked.

“The difference lies in whether you’re watching content that celebrates mutual pleasure and realistic intimacy, or content that prioritises performance over connection.”
