Reaching the impressive milestone of 100 years is noteworthy in itself, but living past 100 without ever engaging in sexual activity is truly distinctive.
Clara Meadmore lived an extraordinary life, passing away in 2011 at the age of 108. Throughout her lifetime, she resided in the UK, New Zealand, and Canada, experiencing a rich tapestry of experiences.
In her twenties, she was employed as a housekeeper and secretary, contributing to Britain’s efforts during World War 2 by traveling to Egypt to serve in the army.
Clara eventually settled in Cornwall in the 1960s. Remarkably, it wasn’t until she was 104 that she moved into a nursing home.
Understandably, many were curious about the secrets behind Clara’s longevity.
On her 105th birthday in 2008, Clara attributed her long life to frequent walking, the occasional glass of wine, and her lifelong celibacy.
This raises the question: Why did she choose not to have sex?
As reported by Mail Online, Clara reflected, “I grew up in an era where little girls were to be seen and not heard, so I had to stand up for myself and earn a living.”
She further explained, “I’ve had lots of platonic friendships with men but never felt the need to go further.”
There were instances where people speculated about Clara’s sexuality, questioning if she might be gay, but she was firm in denying these assumptions.
She told The Guardian, “People have asked me whether I am homosexual and the answer is no. I have just never been interested in sex.”
Clara added, “I imagine there is a lot of hassle involved and I have always been busy doing other things.”
In a conversation on her 105th birthday, Clara’s closest friend Josie noted that Clara certainly didn’t appear to be a typical centenarian.
Josie remarked, “You’re as young as you feel. Clara is by no means 105 in many ways. Maybe never having a man under her feet has kept her young all these years.”
Josie’s observations certainly resonate.
Clara revealed that she realized at the age of 12 she had no desire to marry.
Reflecting on her life choices, she stated, “Everything seems so fast these days. I don’t know a lot about young people or the way they do things. I’m sure it’s very different.”
She continued, “I made my mind up at the age of 12 never to marry and I’ve not gone back on that.”
“People have their own views on sex, but I was never interested in it. I just never met anyone I wanted to marry, and I’ve always been happy alone.”
