GameStop’s New ‘Trade Anything’ Credit Plan Criticized; 20 Non-Exchangeable Items Listed

GameStop has announced peculiar plans for customers to exchange ‘anything’ for store credit – although there are 20 items excluded from the promotion.

Specializing in video games, gaming consoles, and collectibles, GameStop is one of the largest physical retailers in the US, with 2,157 stores as of July.

The retailer has now shared details about its significant Trade Anything Day happening on Saturday, December 6.

Despite the name suggesting you can trade literally anything for store credit, there are about 20 types of items that are not eligible for the deal.

Strangely enough, you can trade your taxidermied pet squirrel.

Store credit can be used towards new gaming titles and consoles. The credit amount varies based on the items you trade in and whether you are a GameStop Pro Member.

According to their website, GameStop notes that employees have the right to refuse ‘any item’.

If you’re considering trading any of the banned items, it’s best not to bother.

Not everyone is looking forward to December 6, with some people planning to stay away from the event.

On the GameStop Reddit community, one user shared the event details and commented: “Godspeed on December 6th… I just know people are gonna try to pull some stupid s**t with this. Good luck and try not to let it break you.”

“It’s official. This is their worst decision,” another person chimed in.

“As a customer, I’m not going to step foot in any GameStop on 12/6. Might be worse than Black Friday,” someone else remarked.

Another user added, “Same… will be avoiding this like the plague.”

On X, previously known as Twitter, many couldn’t get over the taxidermy aspect.

“Killing bro and taxidermizing him so I can lowk get Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast with GameStop credit,” one person joked, sharing a Spongebob reaction meme.

“The innocent GameStop Employee seeing me trade in a box of 500 squirrels. (It’s ok cause they’re all taxidermy),” another person quipped, including a GIF of Rowley Jefferson from Diary of a Wimpy Kid smiling and waving and then looking shocked.

GameStop has been contacted for comment.
