Ariana Grande has shared insights into the physical closeness that fans have observed between her and her Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo.
Their affectionate dynamic has caught attention since the initial press tour for the film adaptation of Wicked last year. It even gained meme status due to a particularly memorable hand-holding incident.
During interactions with the press, the duo was informed that many fans were eagerly anticipating some of the musical’s popular numbers. This moment led to Erivo becoming emotional, prompting Grande to offer support by holding one of her fingers.
The connection between Grande and Erivo remains strong as they promote the sequel film, Wicked: For Good, set to hit theaters next week on November 21.
Grande has now clarified the nature of her relationship with Erivo and the reasons behind their frequent displays of physical touch.

In a conversation on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, Grande explained that their physical closeness has been integral to their on-screen success and the overall philosophy of the film’s production.
In the podcast, the ‘Thank U, Next’ artist expressed to Poehler that she wanted them to feel secure with each other, emphasizing their emotional and physical connection as a way to remain united throughout the filming process.
She recounted an initial discussion with Erivo, saying, “Hey, we’re getting to know each other, we’re gonna learn a lot about each other very quickly, I want you to know there’s nothing that we can’t talk about.”
This prompted Poehler to inquire about their notable intimacy, resulting in some nervous laughter.

“You guys just physically checked in, it’s really sweet how you touch each other,” Poehler noted, leading to a bout of giggles.
Regaining composure, Poehler continued: “You like to touch, in a non-sexual way, in a loving way, like supporting each other. You like to hold each other’s hands, it’s very sweet.”
Reflecting on her tendency to be tactile, Grande said: “I channel a lot of energy through my hands, and so I’m always holding a hand, I’m always squeezing something.”
Addressing the viral ‘holding space’ moment, she explained that her tactile approach varies depending on ‘who I’m with’.
When confronted with a peculiar question, Erivo quietly remarked, ‘I didn’t know that was happening,’ before adding, ‘That’s really powerful.’
Grande acknowledged the surprising moment, saying, “I like to channel support and energy… I didn’t even notice it was a thing until that thing happened.”
She added, “I knew it was tender and sincere and beautiful, and I just wanted to be supportive. It felt sweet, it felt beautiful, and it was beautiful.”
Grande highlighted that this supportive environment was cultivated as part of the production, which grossed $759 million at the box office. She credited director Jon Chu for encouraging the cast to care for each other, aiming to honor the project and produce exceptional work.
