Top advice from cruise experts: What you should never do in your cabin and why it matters

Cruise ship professionals have issued a warning to travelers, highlighting the potential danger to others if a certain item is used in their cabin rooms.

Embarking on a cruise is meant to be an exciting and enjoyable experience for everyone. However, there are essential rules that must be adhered to during the journey.

Alongside the usual travel and vacation etiquette, some cruise ship specialists have emphasized the importance of not bringing a specific piece of equipment and using it in your cabin, even if it’s something you would typically carry on a hotel holiday.

Cruise ship expert Jayson Judson frequently shares insights on TikTok about cruise ship travel, including important dos and don’ts.

In a particular video, he emphasized that certain travel items should be avoided, as they could pose a safety and health hazard—two critical concerns when isolated at sea, far from immediate assistance.

Judson advised against using surge protector power cords in cabins.

He explained the rationale, stating: “They mess with the ship’s electrical system. Instead, use a cruise-approved extension cord.”

Melissa Cabey, a cruise ship expert with years of experience traveling as an entertainer on cruise ships, also discussed this topic.

Supporting Judson’s advice, she wrote in a report: “[Surge protector power cords] can cause issues with the ship’s electrical system—so much so that it could blow out the electrical sockets in your cabin.

She continued: “[The cords] generate heat, which poses a fire risk on cruise ships. As a crew member, I was always taught in safety training that fire is the number one risk onboard a cruise ship.

“Electricity doesn’t work how it works on land, and depending on many different factors, a fire could easily be started by things like surge protected power cords.”

Cabey also pointed out that while many cruise lines list these items as forbidden, they can sometimes slip past security and be used by passengers unaware of the rule.

She acknowledged that the need for an extension cord is genuine for passengers, given that some rooms have limited outlets, which can be challenging for families.

Ultimately, it is safer to invest in a cruise-safe extension cord.
