Man who has trekked the world for 27 years without transport shares his top three destinations

A man from the UK has dedicated 27 years to walking across the world, and has shared his top three favorite places.

While many dream of traveling the world, few would choose to forgo modern transportation in favor of walking and swimming across continents.

This was the path Karl Bushby embarked upon at the age of 29, and he has continued this journey for more than twenty years.

Now 56, Bushby frequently uses social media to discuss his travel experiences and post videos of his current adventures around the globe.

In a recent TikTok post about crossing the Caspian Sea, someone asked him about his favorite country.

The Caspian Sea spans over 143,000 square miles, touching Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Iran.

To clarify, Bushby didn’t swim the entire sea in one go; he took breaks to sleep on a nearby vessel and resumed from his previous stopping point each day.

When asked about his favorite locations, Bushby mentioned Colombia, Chile, and Mexico, though he did not elaborate on his reasons.

However, he has discussed some of the most terrifying places he has encountered during his 27 years of travel.

One such place was the Darién Gap, an area of dense rainforest with no roads between Panama and Colombia, which he traversed in the early 2000s.

In an interview with CBS, he described the area as being ‘in the middle of a warzone’ due to the presence of cartels.

He explained, “There was a whole layer above that that was cartels and drug plantations, and then really, really tough jungle.”

Bushby also cited his crossing of the Bering Strait as a harrowing experience. In doing so, he became the first Brit to accomplish this feat.

Located between the Pacific and Arctic oceans, the Bering Strait is where he encountered a polar bear, a situation that was undoubtedly perilous.

Reflecting on the ordeal, he commented: “You’re in a very serious world that will kill you in 20 minutes if you mess up.”
