Significant development as community raises over $1 million for 88-year-old army veteran working at supermarket after pension loss

Occasionally, the internet unites to perform a benevolent act, and recently a significant achievement has been accomplished for a veteran.

Generous individuals offered their support to 88-year-old Ed Bambas, a veteran who continued to work in a supermarket after his pension vanished when his company declared bankruptcy in 2012.

In the latest update, a phenomenal one million dollars was gathered for Ed, enabling him to retire and relax.

Not only did he lose his pension, but his wife also fell ill, forcing him to sell their home to cover expenses since they lost their health insurance simultaneously with the pension.

His story gained widespread attention after it was revealed that he was working eight-hour shifts, five days a week, at a supermarket located about 45 miles west of Detroit.

His fortune turned around when someone recommended him to Sam Weidenhofer, an influencer known for his philanthropic endeavors.

Sam traveled from Australia to Michigan to meet the veteran at the supermarket where he was employed, having successfully located him.

The influencer handed him a $400 tip and initiated a GoFundMe campaign, which quickly began accumulating thousands of dollars.

Sam recently provided an update on the fundraising total: an impressive $1.77 million, marking a notable moment for the platform.

He stated: “1.77 MILLION, One of the biggest individual fundraisers in GoFundMe HISTORY. You’ve changed Ed, an 88-year-old veteran’s life, from the bottom of my heart thank you!”

The caption further mentioned: “You haven’t just helped Ed, you’ve raised awareness & spread hope to the ENTIRE WORLD. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. We have the best community in the world.”

This was shared along with a photo of an emotional Ed, as he received the substantial check for $1,771,406.

The veteran was understandably overwhelmed and moved to tears by this gesture.

Reflecting on the unexpected attention, the 88-year-old shared with WXYZ News: “It came out of the clear blue — I really truly mean that.”

“I’ve never been on those programs (TikTok and Instagram), I don’t own one of those fancy cellphones. In fact, I still have a flip phone just to talk to people.”

He also reminisced about his late wife in a touching moment: “I try to go to the gravesite every day. It helps me get through my day.”

It seems Sam may need to prepare a new check, as donations continue to pour in.

At the time of writing, the new fundraising total has reached $1,854,126.

One commenter offered suggestions for how Ed might enjoy the money: “Watch every sunrise and sunset Ed! Eat lobster, bring your wife fresh flowers every time you visit. Do all the things. You deserve this and so much more Ed. Thank you for your service Sir!” Many others expressed gratitude for his military service.”
