Selena Gomez’s voice change has been a topic of discussion for some time, and she has now spoken out about the rumors.
Many of us became familiar with the 33-year-old’s voice when she first appeared as Gianna on Barney & Friends in 2002.
However, like most people, her voice began to evolve as she matured, particularly noticeable after the 2019 release of her song, ‘Lose You To Love Me’.
Fans observed a difference in Gomez’s voice, leading to widespread social media speculation about the cause, and much of it was unkind.
Some described her tone as becoming more monotone and slower, raising concerns about the reasons behind this change.
Following her appearances at the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, Gomez’s voice was the subject of intense online scrutiny.

A TikTok compilation video showcased her voice progression over the years, starting from her time as a teen actress to the present.
An interview clip with Access Hollywood from the 2025 Golden Globe Awards also sparked concern among social media users, with one commenting: “It looks like it’s painful for her to talk at the end clip.”
Another person noted: “Some people say it’s related to a medical condition but idk about that. If that’s the case then I feel bad for letting it irritate me. It’s just so nasal and weird – kind of emotionless.”
Many speculated that Gomez’s lupus diagnosis, which led to a kidney transplant in 2017, might be responsible for the changes in her voice.
While some believed her lupus could be the cause, the singer had not addressed this speculation until now.
During a live stream, Gomez clarified the situation.
She explained that swelling in her throat can sometimes alter her voice.
Gomez stated: “There is no excuse, I don’t really care. I think my point is that sometimes things happen and my throat kind of swells in the inside sometimes. That’s all.”
Unfortunately, this is a possible effect of lupus as Healthline notes that lupus can ’cause inflammation and tissue damage’ to the vocal cords and lungs.
Additional symptoms of lupus may include a weaker voice, a breathier sound, and difficulty projecting the voice.
Gomez added: “I’m glad you’ll being real with me on the Live. I appreciate it for real.”
Her explanation was met with support from many online, who were dismayed at the criticism she faced over her changing voice.
“I’m glad she cleared this up bc we all grew up knowing her voice then there was this drastic switch and then ppl were making up all types of. Hope she gets better,” said one commenter.
Another added: “Love how honest and open she is Selena addressing it herself with grace and confidence — that’s real strength. Always rooting for her.”
A supporter defended Gomez, expressing: “I love her so much She shouldn’t have to explain s**t. People are so mean for no reason.”
An additional fan remarked: “The fact that she even has to address this. ppl are so weird.”
