Rapper Ice Spice criticized over ‘inappropriate’ attire at children’s SpongeBob event

Rapper Ice Spice has found herself at the center of controversy with social media users criticizing her for what they deem an ‘inappropriate’ choice of attire at a children’s movie premiere.

The 25-year-old artist attended an early screening of *The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants* in New York City on Wednesday (December 17). However, instead of the animated film capturing the spotlight, much of the focus shifted to her outfit.

Ice Spice chose a sheer white Blumarine dress that exposed matching underwear beneath, a decision some felt was unsuitable for a family-oriented event.

Social media platforms were quickly filled with negative feedback.

“Are we just going to ignore the ‘kids’ premiere,” one individual questioned, while another straightforwardly asked: “Where did she think she was going?”

Another remarked: “So inappropriate to wear to a kids movie event.”

Despite the criticism, some fans appreciated her look, with one of the most-liked comments reading: “She took the words ‘bikini bottom’ real serious.”

The backlash persisted with some questioning the role of her advisory team.

One person commented: “Is she not supposed to have a whole team to advise her against this?”

Another simply stated: “Actually outrageous.”

Ice Spice contributes to the film by voicing a minor character and has also created an original song titled ‘Big Guy’ for the soundtrack. This opportunity is likely a dream come true for her as she’s expressed being an avid *SpongeBob* fan, even naming ‘Bikini Bottom’ as a track on her 2023 debut album.

The movie, marking the fourth installment in the *SpongeBob* series, is now playing in US theaters (December 19). It follows SpongeBob on a deep-sea quest to establish himself as a ‘big guy’ to Mr. Krabs.

Directed by Derek Drymon, the film features voice performances by Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, and Carolyn Lawrence.

In a recent appearance on *The Kelly Clarkson Show*, Ice Spice discussed the creative process behind the song for *The SpongeBob Movie*.

“This was probably the hundredth draft, probably, that finally made it out—that you guys are hearing,” she explained. “The whole premise of the film is about SpongeBob becoming, like, a ‘big guy’ and so I had to really incorporate that phrase throughout the song. It all turned out to really work out in the end and I’m just happy that it took this many drafts because it’s my favorite one.”

While Ice Spice has faced considerable backlash for her choice of attire at the premiere, fans of *SpongeBob* can still look forward to her contributions to the movie’s performance and soundtrack.
