George and Amal Clooney have recently been granted citizenship in a new country as they opt for a more tranquil family life abroad, distancing themselves from the Hollywood scene.
The 64-year-old actor, known for his role in Jay Kelly, and his wife, Amal Clooney, an esteemed international human rights lawyer, are parents to eight-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella.
Amal announced her pregnancy with twins on CBS’s The Talk in February 2017.
She gave birth to Alexander and Ella on June 6, 2017. Although the couple has maintained their children’s privacy, they’ve openly expressed their intention to raise them outside the United States.
The twins have mainly grown up in Italy, where the Clooneys have owned a luxurious villa by the picturesque Lake Como since 2002.
George Clooney has shared that their children speak fluent Italian, a language neither he nor Amal, who has Lebanese and British heritage, speak.
In 2020, while on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Clooney humorously remarked: “We’ve armed them with a language.”
He elaborated on their playful nature, saying, “I’ll say, ‘Go back in and clean your room,’ and they’ll be like, ‘Eh, papa stronzo’, which means ‘turd’, though it’s akin to ‘a**hole’ in everyday speech.”
He jokingly added: “I’m from Kentucky, English is a second language to me.”
The family has now received citizenship from France.
The New York Times reported that the French government approved the decision over the weekend.
Documents from the Ministry of Justice confirmed that George, Amal, and their twins have been granted citizenship.
The Clooneys own a farmhouse close to Brignoles in Provence, purchased in 2021.
Their beautiful property includes vineyards, olive groves, a lake, a pool, and a tennis court, serving as their home in southern France.
In a conversation with French broadcaster RTL earlier this month, Clooney explained their fondness for the country.
He stated, “Here, they don’t take photos of kids. There aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us.”
“We also have a house in the United States, but our happiest place is on this farm where the kids can have fun.”
Clooney mentioned he is trying to learn French using Duolingo, though he admits finding it challenging.
Now, the Clooney children will have yet another language to playfully tease their parents with. We’ll have to see how George’s Duolingo streak progresses.
