Vocalist marks 50th birthday by ‘wedding her dog’ with bandmates and friends present

Jenny Lewis, the renowned singer, has celebrated her milestone 50th birthday by ‘marrying’ her beloved cockapoo in a unique ceremony surrounded by friends and fellow musicians.

Navigating the dating world can be challenging, particularly as one ages, and it seems Lewis has opted to forgo the traditional pursuit of a partner by choosing to ‘marry’ her dog, Bobby Rhubarb.

The lead singer of Rilo Kiley, celebrated her 50th birthday on Thursday, January 8, and took to social media on Saturday, January 10, to share several snapshots from the memorable event.

“I married my dog for my 50th birthday…BLESS!” she wrote on her X post, accompanied by various Polaroid photos from the intimate backyard ceremony.

In a remarkable show of commitment, Lewis wore a wedding dress for the occasion, and two cakes were also featured in the pictures. The cakes, adorned with multiple layers and vibrant colors, bore the inscriptions ‘JL50’ and ‘For BETTER or for WORSE I do!’

The post quickly garnered attention, with many commenting to share their congratulations, while some couldn’t resist a playful dog pun.

“Bad news: Dogs get the seven-year itch almost immediately. Good news: It can easily be cured with belly scratches,” one user wrote. Another chimed in: “He might forget your anniversary, just let it slide.”

Consequence Daily provided further insights into the event, showcasing additional photos of Lewis and her cockapoo’s special day.

In one of the images, Lewis is seen holding a red-and-pink bouquet in one hand and the dog’s leash in the other.

The ceremony was attended by several notable guests, including Morgan Nagler, Dave Scher, and Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet. Lewis’ bandmate, Ben Gibbard, was also present and performed alongside her during the reception.

In a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Lewis opened up about her bond with her dog, revealing that she adopted him during a challenging period in her 40s.

Reflecting on that time, Lewis said: “I was in a really rough spot. I’d been isolated for over a year, quarantining totally on my own, and I had to find things to get me out of the house. The truck provided that.

“I don’t have any kids, but this dog opened me up in so many ways — being responsible for a soul and caring for something outside of yourself. It’s been a really important lesson for me. Kind of obvious, I guess, but I had no idea. I had fantasies of owning a white wolf.

“Instead, I ended up with a cockapoo.”
