Home Alone actress Catherine O’Hara shared a ‘horrific’ line she found difficult in a scene with Macaulay Culkin

Catherine O’Hara expressed her admiration for her Home Alone co-star Macaulay Culkin during a speech when he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.

O’Hara portrayed Culkin’s mother in the cherished holiday classic, which debuted in December 1990. At the time of filming, Culkin was merely 10, while O’Hara was 36.

Despite the film being released over three decades ago, O’Hara and Culkin maintained a close connection. Culkin was among the first to publicly honor the esteemed actress following her passing on January 30, 2026.

Alongside touching photos of them on the Home Alone set and a more recent image from 2023, Culkin shared: “Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you, but I had so much more to say.”

His heartfelt message continued: “I love you. I’ll see you later.”

The recent picture he posted was taken during the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in December 2023, where O’Hara delivered a speech for Culkin’s special occasion.

During her speech, O’Hara reminisced about filming a memorable Home Alone scene with Culkin.

She recounted: “The scene where I had to drag him upstairs to sleep in the attic because he’d misbehaved, and he says – you know, he’s mouthing off about the family – and I say, ‘Well, you’d be pretty sad if you woke up tomorrow morning and you didn’t have a family’.”

She continued: “And he said, ‘no I wouldn’t,’ and I was supposed to say, ‘Then say it again, maybe it’ll happen’.

O’Hara admitted that the line was difficult for her to deliver because she couldn’t comprehend saying something so harsh to such a lovely child.

She humorously added: “I was not yet a mother at the time and I had no idea of the kind of things that would come out of my mouth with my own two sons.”

O’Hara leaves behind her husband, Bo Welch, and their sons, Matthew (born in 1994), and Luke (born in 1997).

Eugene Levy also paid tribute to the Schitt’s Creek icon alongside Culkin.

In a statement shared with USA Today on January 31, Levy expressed: “Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today.”

He continued: “I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years.”

The duo appeared together in films such as Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration, as well as the highly acclaimed sitcom Schitt’s Creek.
