Why certain Republicans label Bad Bunny’s Spanish halftime performance ‘unlawful’

Several Republican lawmakers have labeled Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime performance as ‘illegal’ and are urging an investigation into the event.

During his 13-minute performance on Sunday, February 8, the Puerto Rican artist delivered a show entirely in Spanish. It highlighted his ability to engage audiences and celebrate his cultural heritage, as well as that of many others across the United States, on a global stage.

The performance was not only filled with hidden messages but also left fans amazed and buzzing online due to unexpected guest appearances.

Republicans Randy Fine and Andy Ogles are demanding an analysis of Bad Bunny’s songs, ‘Tití Me Preguntó,’ ‘Nuevayol,’ and ‘DtMF,’ due to claims that they contain explicit material.

On Monday, February 9, Fine expressed his view on X, stating: “You can’t say the f-word on live TV.”

The following day, Fine shared a letter addressed to Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr. In the letter, he stated the ‘woke garbage witnessed on Super Bowl Sunday needs to be INVESTIGATED and put to an END.’

Fine, who has represented the state’s 6th Congressional District since April 2025, asserted that ‘real Americans’ were upset by what he described as vulgar, indecent, and offensive content.

“The degenerates behind it must be held accountable,” he continued, calling out NBCUniversal, which broadcast the game, along with the National Football League (NFL).

He further stated: “… If they knowingly allowed this content to air, then dramatic action, including fines and the revocation of broadcast licenses, should be taken.”

Ogles also penned a letter concerning the show, choosing to contact the House Energy and Commerce Committee instead.

He described the performance as ‘pure smut, brazenly aired on national television for every American family to witness’.

In his communication, he also called for an inquiry into the NFL and NBC regarding their ‘prior knowledge, review, and approval’ of the performance.

“Children were forced to endure explicit displays of gay sexual acts, women gyrating provocatively, and Bad Bunny shamelessly grabbing his crotch while dry-humping the air,” Ogles commented on X, adding: “And if that weren’t outrageous enough, the performance’s lyrics openly glorified sodomy and countless other unspeakable depravities. These flagrant, indecent acts are illegal to be displayed on public airways.”

Ogles also stated that the songs, ‘Safaera’ and ‘Yo Perreo Sola,’ contained sexual content that is ‘readily apparent across any language barrier’.

However, axios reported that the allegations of the singer using the ‘f-word’ were unfounded, clarifying that Bad Bunny had bleeped out explicit words or modified his songs by omitting some of the more suggestive content.

Representatives of Bad Bunny, NBC, and the NFL were contacted for comment.
