Leading polling firm decides to stop tracking Trump’s popularity, raising concerning theories

Gallup has announced it is discontinuing its tracking of presidential approval ratings, a decision that comes in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s approval rating decline.

Gallup Inc. is one of the most esteemed American global analytics and advisory firms, known for monitoring US public opinion.

For over eight decades, Gallup has tracked the approval ratings of U.S. presidents, including Donald Trump.

Recently, the company noted a decline in Trump’s approval rating, from 47 percent in February 2025 to 36 percent in its most recent poll conducted in December. Subsequently, Gallup has disclosed its decision to cease tracking ‘Presidential Approval Ratings [for] Donald Trump’.

After 88 years of tracking these ratings, why is the analytics firm stopping its efforts now?

Social media users have begun speculating online.

One user commented: “*Trump approval rating drops to 29 percent* *Approval stops being measured*

“Don’t think I need to call the Scooby gang to solve this mystery.”

“After nearly nine decades of tracking presidential approval ratings, Gallup has decided to end their poll measuring following threats from the orange felon after showing his historically low approval ratings. This is what cowardice and bending the knee to a tyrant looks like,” another suggested.

A third user wrote: “Btw, Gallup’s last report of Trump’s approval rating was among the lowest rating for President ever recorded in its history. Now, after 88 years, they’re not measuring it anymore. Nothing suspicious going on here I’m sure.”

But what has Gallup officially stated regarding this decision?

In a statement to The Post, Gallup spokesperson Justin McCarthy explained that ‘the context around these measures has changed’.

“They are now widely produced, aggregated and interpreted, and no longer represent an area where Gallup can make its most distinctive contribution,” he stated.

Additionally, a spokesperson for the agency noted to The Hill that the change ‘is part of a broader, ongoing effort to align all of Gallup’s public work with its mission’ and ‘is a strategic shift solely based on Gallup’s research goals and priorities’.

The spokesperson concluded: “Our commitment is to long-term, methodologically sound research on issues and conditions that shape people’s lives. That work will continue through the Gallup Poll Social Series, the Gallup Quarterly Business Review, the World Poll, and our portfolio of U.S. and global research.”

“[…] We look forward to continuing to offer independent research that adheres to the highest standards of social science.”

Efforts have been made to reach out to Gallup for additional comments.
