Oldest American man reveals his three secrets for longevity

A 111-year-old man has shared his advice on living a long and healthy life, highlighting three key habits that are both simple and achievable for most people.

Although immortality remains in the realm of fiction, adopting certain lifestyle practices can contribute to a lengthy and healthy existence. Regular physical activity, nutritious eating, and laughter, while steering clear of detrimental habits, can be beneficial over time.

However, Luis Cano, who recently marked another birthday milestone and takes pride in his longevity, suggests three essential practices everyone should follow.

Currently recognized as the oldest man in the United States, Luis revealed his longevity tips during a conversation with Fox 5 News.

Originating from Colombia and residing in New Jersey, the centenarian described living in the U.S. as a “lifetime accomplishment.” To maximize his time there, he advised, “Don’t drink, always get a good sleep and don’t smoke,” in his interview with Fox 5.

He also playfully added the importance of good behavior as part of living a fulfilling life.

Born on December 9, 1914, Luis lives with two of his children in his home in Linden. He enjoys spending his days watching out the window, reflecting on his life’s journey, and viewing airplanes—an interest he has cherished throughout his life. He also has a passion for fishing.

Grateful for the care and support of his family, Luis expressed happiness in being the oldest living man in America. According to Longeviquest, which tracks the ages of the world’s oldest individuals, he ranks as the 12th oldest person worldwide.

In his youth, Luis joined the Colombian army, foregoing formal education. After his military service, he established a bus fleet company, providing transportation across rural areas in Colombia.

He and his wife, Alicia, relocated to the United States in the 1990s, raising 10 children together. Although Alicia passed away in 2004, Luis has since met 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, all of whom take immense pride in him.

The title of the world’s oldest man is believed to belong to João Marinho Neto from Brazil, who is 113 years old, having been born in 1912. The record for the longest-lived man is held by Jiroemon Kimura (1897-2013) from Japan, who reached the age of 116.
