Biohacker Bryan Johnson explains shocking impact magic mushrooms had on his body

Magic mushrooms have long been used as a gateway into a new reality, but infamous biohacker Bryan Johnson believes they could have as big an impact on your body as they do on your mind.

Bryan Johnson, a former venture capitalist now known for pouring millions into health interventions aimed at helping him ‘live forever’, first brought psilocybin into his routine in December, when he livestreamed himself taking what’s often described as a ‘heroic’ dose.

Instead of walking away from the experience after the laughter and vivid hallucinations, Johnson decided to continue—this time with a more structured goal. He set out to collect data on whether repeated high-dose sessions of psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in magic mushrooms, might influence measurable health markers alongside the mental effects.

Discussing his findings on Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast, the 48-year-old said: “Psilocybin sits in the world of psychedelics but it’s never been bridged to longevity, so we did an experiment. The data was surprisingly insane.”

Johnson said the protocol he’s been following involves taking around five grams of mushrooms—equating, in his estimate, to about 25mg of psilocybin—once every 30 days.

That amount is well above what many recreational users take, with typical doses aimed at producing effects like hallucinations, heightened introspection, and an altered sense of physical and emotional state.

Interest in magic mushrooms has surged over the past decade, with researchers examining potential clinical uses for conditions including PTSD, depression, and alcohol use disorder.

Johnson, however, believes the implications could extend beyond mental health. He argued that frequent high-dose sessions might shift underlying biology in ways that support longevity.

As he put it: “My blood glucose went from 98.2 percent in the population to 99.8 percent. It almost hit like a metabolic reset in the brain, resetting blood glucose regulation, which is gigantic.”

Because he tracks an extensive set of biological measurements, Johnson said he didn’t expect psychedelic sessions to register so strongly in the metrics he uses to judge progress toward his long-term health goals.

He told Theo Von: “It took my inflammation levels down to undetectable, had changes in my microbiome, it legit is a longevity therapy,” describing the effects he believes he’s seen after taking a large dose monthly since December.

Even while emphasizing positives, Johnson stressed that the work is ongoing and that stronger conclusions would require more evidence. “We are still in really early days but right now I do it once every 30 days, 25 milligrams of psilocybin B+ mushroom strain,” he said.

It’s also important to note that despite the long history of human psychedelic use, experts commonly warn that psychedelics may be unsafe for some people—particularly those living with conditions such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or anyone dealing with recent trauma.
