Chappell Roan accused of ‘shaming fans’ after filming divisive video of people ‘harassing’ her

Singer Chappell Roan has sparked a big online debate after a clip showed her telling fans and paparazzi to ‘go away.’

The 28-year-old ‘Subway’ singer drew plenty of attention at the Alexander McQueen Autumn Winter 2026 show on Sunday (March 8) during Paris Fashion Week, stepping out in a sheer black dress without a bra.

Not long after that appearance made headlines, a separate video began spreading online that shows Roan confronting photographers and supporters as she tries to go about her evening.

In the footage, Roan is standing beside a car in Paris while a cluster of paparazzi gathers around her.

She then lifts her phone to film, speaking directly to her own camera as she records what’s happening.

She can be heard saying: “When you’re disregarded as a human, this is what it’s like. I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me.”

Roan turns the camera toward several photographers in the group, with some appearing to try to hide their faces.

While scanning her phone across the crowd, she says: “These are all the people who are completely disregarding all of my boundaries,” and asks them to stop ‘following’ and ‘harassing’ her.

During the same moment, a fan can be seen asking for an autograph on what looks like a vinyl sleeve. As Roan points the camera in his direction, he waves and appears to keep speaking to her.

The 54-second clip has since been reposted widely on Reddit, Twitter and Instagram, prompting a flood of reactions.

Critics argued she was being unfair to supporters, with one writing: “This is weird. Shaming your own fans is very weird. Paparazzi and fans aren’t the same things.”

“I’m embarrassed for her,” another added, while a third commented: “Sadly she’s giving them exactly what they want. It’s sucks that they do this.”

Another person suggested she should have handled it differently, saying: “Can’t help thinking it would have been better on this occasion to sweep inside than complain in full view for a minute. The only way to remove power from the paparazzi is to give them nothing to feed on.”

Others, however, defended Roan’s reaction and said she had every right to set limits. “Respect not wanting to smile, take pictures or sign s**t outside of regular events. She’s going to dinner, you’re not entitled to her time,” one user said.

“She’s allowed to say no,” another agreed, while someone else added: “Just because ‘this is how it is!” doesn’t mean this is how it HAS to be.

“She’s advocating for a more respectful form of interaction from paparazzi and I see nothing wrong with that.”

One commenter even wrote: “She should be a lot meaner idk.”

This also isn’t the first time Roan has publicly clashed with paparazzi.

At the 2024 VMAs, she had a widely shared red-carpet exchange with photographers after one reportedly shouted at her.

Roan reacted loudly, telling the paparazzi to ‘shut the f**k up’ and making it clear they don’t get to yell at her like that.

Afterward, she said red carpets can feel ‘overwhelming and scary,’ particularly when people are shouting.

She has also used social media to call for more respectful behaviour from both fans and photographers, stressing that she shouldn’t be treated as if her time or personal space is available on demand in public.

In a TikTok series, she spoke about unsettling experiences, including people turning up at her hotel or at the airport after tracking down her flight information, which she said contributed to her decision to speak more firmly about boundaries.
