Donald Trump jokes he was ‘falling asleep’ during Iran war meeting

Staying alert while discussing a potential conflict with one of America’s chief adversaries might sound like a basic expectation for any Commander-in-Chief, yet Donald Trump said this week he was nodding off during an important briefing.

It’s not the first time Trump has been accused of “resting his eyes.” Photographers previously caught the 79-year-old appearing to doze in November during an Oval Office press event focused on GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

At a political rally on Wednesday, March 11, Trump told the crowd he had trouble keeping awake as senior military officials walked him through plans that have since been carried out — aimed at striking Iran and dismantling its political leadership.

Describing the ramp-up to war, the president acted out the exchange, recalling officials presenting him with options: “They gave me a list of names to choose, ‘Sir, you can pick the name you’d like sir.’ I said, ‘the name of what?’

He said they replied: “The name of the attack on Iran, sir.”

Trump then told supporters he found the naming discussion mind-numbing. “And they gave me, like, 20 names, and I’m like, falling asleep,” he said.

He also explained which option finally caught his attention, adding: “I didn’t like any of them. Then I see ‘Epic Fury.’ I said, ‘I like that name. I like that name.’ ”

Although Trump appeared to be playing it for laughs, his comments echo other moments that have fueled similar speculation, including prior clips in which he seemed to drift during public appearances.

In December, more footage circulated that showed the oldest person ever elected president again appearing to nod off. At the time, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised his conduct in the session as “amazing.”

She added: “President Trump was listening attentively and running the entire three-hour marathon Cabinet meeting.” Even so, Trump has largely conceded that some scheduled meetings don’t hold his attention.

Speaking to New York magazine in January, Trump said: “It’s boring as hell.

“I have to sit back and listen, and I move my hand so that people will know I’m listening. I’m hearing every word, and I can’t wait to get out.”

Later that month, in a separate interview with the Wall Street Journal, he suggested photographers were responsible for the perception, arguing: “Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking.

“And they’ll catch me with the blink.”

As the reported death toll among American service members linked to ‘Operation Epic Fury’ reached 11 on Thursday — following an as-yet unexplained crash involving a KC-135 refueling plane and another aircraft over Iraq — many military families will be hoping the president is fully engaged when these briefings take place.
