Jack Black issues update on Tenacious D reunion after Trump shooting controversy

Jack Black has had a whirlwind 12 months on screen, with major roles in The Minecraft Movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Anaconda, plus other projects still in the works. But anyone hoping that run would be followed by a quick return to his music career is going to be disappointed.

The Tenacious D frontman has confirmed he has “no plans” to tour with the band or put out new music in the near future, meaning the group’s pause remains in place almost two years after the controversy surrounding comments from bandmate Kyle Gass.

Gass had suggested recently that he and Black could be back in the studio ‘soon’, but Black pushed back on that idea in remarks to TMZ, saying they currently “don’t have any plans.”

Tenacious D have been inactive since July 2024, when Gass made a joke referencing the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, who was shot at while campaigning for a second term.

The remark happened during a birthday moment at a Sydney show. After the crowd sang ‘happy birthday’, Gass was handed a cake covered in candles and prompted to make a wish.

Instead of offering something harmless, he stunned attendees with: “Don’t miss Trump next time.”

The room erupted in laughter, with Black also reacting in the moment, though he later said his response came from surprise and nerves rather than any endorsement of what was said.

“I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” the Tropic Thunder star wrote on social media at the time. “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Since that announcement, the pair have not taken the stage together. Still, Gass has maintained that the break shouldn’t be mistaken for a permanent ending, and has continued to tell fans the band will eventually pick things back up.

Speaking to Rolling Stone in January 2026, he described his partnership with Black as similar to a long-term relationship, saying it’s like a marriage where “you go through these ups and downs, and try to understand your partner.”

“We will serve no D-wine before it’s D-time — but we will be back. We will return,” he added.

Black has voiced a similar outlook in the past. In an August 2024 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he said: “We had to take a break, but I love the D and everybody takes a break sometime,” adding “we’ll be back.”
