Olivia Wilde has responded to a clip that spread fast online, prompting viewers to compare her to one of film’s most famously fraught cave-dwellers.
The 42-year-old actor and filmmaker attended the San Francisco International Film Festival on 24 April to promote her new movie The Invite.
Footage from an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle began circulating after people pointed out that the camera positioning and lens choice created an unflattering look, with some commenters likening her appearance to Gollum from Lord of The Rings.
One viewer wrote: “She looks as if she had found the one ring.”
Another suggested the camera operator had done her no favors at all.
The moment was quickly reposted across social media as the screenshot and clip gathered momentum.

On 2 May, Wilde leaned into the joke by posting to her Instagram story, placing the viral screenshot beside an image of the LOTR character and writing: “Leave it to your brother to give you the maximum amount of sh*t.”
In the video, her brother Charlie Cockburn can be heard asking: “Olivia Wilde, do you care to address recent murders that you’re a resurrected corpse?”
Wilde responded with dry, self-mocking humor.
She said: “Listen, that’s a fish-eye lens. And I admit, is that my best angle? Was that my best-ever look? No, It’s startling, it’s a startling image.”
She then reiterated her point, adding: “It was a fish-eye lens. I don’t know why I was so close to the camera. I didn’t have to be. That’s not the truth.”
Her brother continued teasing her, keeping the bit going.
Wilde ended the exchange with a straightforward reassurance: “I’m not dead.”

The Invite sees Wilde starring alongside Seth Rogen, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton, and marks her third feature as a director after Booksmart (2009) and Don’t Worry Darling (2022).
The project is adapted from the 2020 Spanish comedy The People Upstairs. It opened the San Francisco festival and reportedly earned a standing ovation at Sundance in January.
Wilde has also discussed how her directing style and process have shifted since Booksmart.
While her debut was a coming-of-age story she developed over years, The Invite represents a more pointed, mainstream turn: a dinner-party thriller built around a line-up that almost reads like a punchline on paper—Seth Rogan, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton walk into an apartment…
