Trump speaks out as former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani hospitalized in ‘critical but stable condition’

President Trump has shared a statement after former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized in the early hours of this morning (May 4).

Giuliani is said to be in “critical but stable” condition, with those around him asking the public to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.

A prominent Republican figure for decades, Giuliani first rose to national attention as a high-profile prosecutor before winning the New York City mayoral race in 1993.

He later mounted a run for the US Senate in 2000, but ended his campaign against Hillary Clinton shortly after revealing a prostate cancer diagnosis.

In more recent years, Giuliani became closely associated with President Trump, including work as one of his personal attorneys.

After news broke that Giuliani had been admitted to hospital, Trump issued public remarks praising him and calling him a “true warrior.”

Posting on Truth Social, he wrote: “Our fabulous Rudy Giuliani, the best mayor in the history of New York City, BY FAR, has been hospitalized, and is in critical condition.

“What a tragedy that he was treated so badly by the radical left lunatics, democrats ALL – AND HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING!”

He continued: “They cheated on the elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our nation, and now, look at Rudy.

“So sad! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Giuliani’s spokesperson, Ted Goodman, did not disclose the reason for the hospitalization.

Goodman said: “Mayor Giuliani is a fighter who has faced every challenge in his life with unwavering strength, and he’s fighting with that same level of strength as we speak.

“We do ask that you join us in prayer for America’s Mayor Rudy Giuliani.”

Giuliani became widely known as “America’s Mayor” for his public role in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks in 2001, when he was credited with helping rally the city and the country.

He was later recognized internationally for that leadership, receiving an honorary knighthood (KBE) from Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.

In the years since, Giuliani has also drawn sharp criticism, particularly for his involvement as an adviser to Trump during efforts to challenge the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Trump also granted Giuliani a pardon after he faced two criminal charges in two states, along with a defamation lawsuit brought by election workers.

The former mayor had previously been hospitalized in September 2025 following a car crash in New Hampshire, which reportedly left him with a fractured vertebra as well as cuts, bruising, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg.
