Sabrina Carpenter’s Met Gala dress paid tribute to a Hollywood icon

Sabrina Carpenter counts a long list of A-list supporters. She has toured as an opening act for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and, more recently, appeared on Madonna’s new track, Bring Your Love.

At this year’s Met Gala, the 26-year-old used her look to honour one of her personal icons: Hollywood legend Audrey Hepburn.

The “Manchild” singer arrived in a bespoke Dior creation from Jonathan Anderson, leaning fully into the event’s Fashion is Art theme.

The dress’s structure was crafted from strips of film, pulled from the 1954 classic Sabrina, which starred Hepburn as Sabrina Fairchild opposite Humphrey Bogart as Linus.

While speaking with American TV personality and actor La La Anthony during Vogue’s livestream, Carpenter explained: “It is film. It’s all made of film, which is my dream. Jonathan Anderson, the genius that he is, and Dior, the whole team, I can’t even express my love and gratitude for them. We just finished all of my Coachella looks together and then they hopped in on making this dream dress and Jared Ellner, my stylist, we put it all together and it’s amazing…its from the movie Sabrina, which is one of my favourite movies of all time.”

Carpenter’s recent headline-making moment with Madonna came just last month, when the 67-year-old joined her onstage at Coachella to premiere their new song. They also performed Madonna favourites “Vogue” and “Like A Prayer.”

During Carpenter’s set, she was in the middle of her track “Juno” when she hit the viral “have you ever tried this one before?” beat, striking a pose inspired by “Vogue” moments before Madonna appeared.

Reflecting on the Coachella surprise while at the Met Gala, Carpenter said: “I blacked out a bit and then I did it and then I was driving in the car and that was it. It was so electric, I will remember it forever. It was so fun.”

Asked how her music influences her style choices, she told Vogue: “I feel like right now I’m having maybe too much fun. At this point, I’m like the crazier, the better, the more risks you take, the better the payoff. I’m just trying to be as playful as possible…”.

Although Anna Wintour and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute oversee the Met Gala’s overall direction, a significant part of shaping the night falls to the event’s co-chairs.

The co-chair role extends far beyond simply greeting guests. They are widely believed to contribute to everything from the guest list to the room design, and may even have input on the menu that supports the theme—though Wintour remains the ultimate decision-maker.

Typically drawn from major names in fashion, film, music, and sport, co-chairs help define the gala’s public image and pull in attention, star power, and donations, underscoring its purpose as a fundraising event.

This will be Kidman’s third time serving as co-chair, after taking on the duties in both 2003 and 2005.

Beyoncé is set to co-chair for the first time. She last attended the Met Gala in 2016, though she previously held an honorary chair title in 2013. This year, she returned alongside daughter Blue Ivy and husband Jay-Z—her first appearance at the event in a decade—wearing a look by French designer Olivier Rousteing.

It will also be a first co-chair appointment for Williams, despite her long-running presence on the Met red carpet. She follows her sister Serena, who held the position in 2019.

As lead sponsors of the 2026 Met Gala, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos will be recognised as honorary chairs for the evening.
