Woman breaks up with boyfriend after uncovering his shocking ChatGPT history

A woman has opened up about ‘dumping’ her boyfriend after discovering his ChatGPT history, detailing a ‘handful’ of shocking conversations.

As AI tools and online dating continue to shape modern relationships, couples are increasingly split on where the line is drawn — especially when it comes to emotional honesty and digital intimacy.

But writer Lindsey Hall found herself dealing with a different kind of relationship dilemma after looking at her partner’s ChatGPT activity.

Plenty of people now turn to chatbots for reassurance, outside perspective, or help sorting through complicated feelings — yet most don’t expect those private prompts to be seen by someone else.

Hall suggested that while discovering infidelity is painful in a familiar way, stumbling across doubts and critiques about you in a partner’s AI conversation can feel like a distinctly modern betrayal.

“Now, here is where I am certain many will piously tell me I dug my own grave,” she wrote on her Substack.

She explained that her phone had run out of battery, so she borrowed her boyfriend’s laptop to reply to a message. That’s when she noticed an open ChatGPT tab with a title that immediately set off alarm bells: ‘Relationship Issues and Uncertainty’.

“I invaded his privacy, I never should’ve read what I read,” she admitted.

Even so, she kept scrolling.

“Should I be in love after 3.5 months?,” her then-partner questioned, raising concerns about her lifestyle, her history with an eating disorder, her writing online, and even her three cats.

“And then there’s the whole attraction thing,” the soul-destroying chat continued.

Hall said she was stunned by what she saw, writing: “I reread it over and over because I genuinely could not make my brain process.”

And it didn’t stop there.

“Then I read the line that I think I will probably remember to my grave: ‘I’m just not proud of her.'”

Overwhelmed, she said she packed up her belongings while he was still sleeping and left the house.

When he woke up and realized she was gone, she described him as being immediately ashamed. Although the pair attempted to discuss what happened afterward, the rupture was already there.

Hall also shared advice for anyone who suspects AI is playing an outsized role in a partner’s communication or decision-making.

Advising others on what to do if they find themselves in the situation, Lindsey said: “If you suspect the person you’re dating is using AI for messages or to sort their feelings, I think it’s worth having a conversation with that person and asking them how they use AI in their personal lives.”

She added that reactions can vary widely — for some people it’s an immediate dealbreaker, while others view it as relatively harmless.

“It’s almost akin to a values difference in dating,” she added.
