Rescuers wrote haunting four-word message during Maldives divers recovery mission in ‘shark cave’

A group of elite dive specialists who spent hours retrieving the bodies of four Italians killed during an undersea expedition in the Maldives left behind a brief, chilling note while searching a site known as “shark cave”.

The tragedy unfolded last Thursday, May 14, when five members of the expedition died after dropping to nearly 200ft beneath Vaavu Atoll to investigate a complex cave network during a dive expected to last several hours. A sixth diver later died while attempting to help recover the victims.

In the aftermath, a highly trained Finnish recovery team—Sami Paakkarinen, Jenni Westerlund, and Patrik Grönqvist—entered the Maldives’ clear waters, each operating with a defined specialist role designed to manage the risks of the mission and make it back to the surface safely.
