Man who took on marathons in all continents describes moment he was chased through desert by wild dogs

A man who achieved the extraordinary task of running a marathon on every continent has opened up about the moment he thought he might die after being pursued through a desert by wild dogs.

Louis Alexander, 26, is now preparing for an ambitious Guinness World Record attempt, aiming to kayak the seven most dangerous ocean crossings on Earth.

It’s far from his first extreme test. In 2023, the British adventurer completed seven marathons across all seven continents to raise awareness for dementia.

His global running challenge took him from the bitter cold of Antarctica to the unpredictable weather of the Amazon, but one stretch of his African leg left him fearing for his life.

During a marathon route across Morocco’s Agafay Desert, trouble began early—around eight miles into the run.

Recounting what happened, Louis said: “I was running on my own. I had a support crew, two locals in this white Land Rover. They were called Mohammed and Rashid, and they were a couple hundred yards ahead because I’d naively asked them to stay ahead. I wanted to feel like I was on my own running through this desert.”

Not long after, he noticed a new sound cutting through the quiet, and it only got closer.

Louis continued: “I could hear my own breathing and I could also hear my own my footsteps. Then about 14 kilometers in I could hear other footsteps and they got louder and louder and closer and closer. I turned around to see like a dozen wild dogs chasing me through the desert.

“I was somehow saved by my support crew that day. I kept running and Muhammad who was driving began to swerve the vehicle left to right to see if he could scare off these dogs and it somehow worked.”

It wasn’t until he was back home that the full risk of the encounter sank in.

Louis continued to UNILAD: “I had quite a serious conversation with a friend, a paramedic, and she warned me that those dogs had likely never seen humans before, they likely had rabies and really serious diseases.

“Also, the reality was we had no doctor with us, we were over 12 hours away from a hospital, the situation could have ended very differently.”

Despite the close call, Louis hasn’t been discouraged from pushing his limits, with his ocean-kayaking challenge set to take place later this year.
