Simone Biles reveals she ‘almost died’ after having ‘scariest experience of my life’

Simone Biles has shared details of a frightening recent health scare, calling it “one of, if not the scariest experience of my life”.

The gymnastics icon cemented her place in history at the 2024 Paris Olympics, becoming the most decorated US gymnast ever after amassing 11 Olympic medals across her career.

Even with her status as one of the greatest athletes of her generation, Biles has continued to be candid with fans about what life looks like beyond elite competition.

In a new update, the 29-year-old revealed she “almost died” after spending time at home recovering.

Posting to her Instagram Stories on Saturday (June 6), she wrote: “I’m not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today’s age. But almost dying wasn’t on my bingo card earlier this week.

“This was one of, if not the scariest experience of my life. Especially since Jonathan [Owens] was in Indy for practices.”

Owens joined the Indianapolis Colts in March 2026 on a one-year deal, meaning he has been spending extended time away from Biles. The pair married in April 2023.

Biles added: “I’ve been in bed resting this week, I’ll explain sooner or later but s/o to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited & or sent flowers. Loooovveeee y’all.”

She followed the message with photos showing multiple bouquets arranged in vases on a counter, as well as a separate snap of herself lying in bed with her two dogs.

Alongside a screenshot of her resting heart rate, she wrote: “I’ll be here.”

The recent scare isn’t the first time Biles has spoken publicly about the physical toll gymnastics can take. She previously described how hard the Paris Olympics hit her body once the competition ended.

“I went back to the village, took the elevator, and my body literally collapsed,” she told L’Equipe. “I was sick for 10 days.

“The other day, we were sprinting in the garden with friends,” she added. “I had aches and pains for three days.”

Biles has also been open about her experience with the ‘Twisties’ — a condition that can cause a sudden loss of spatial awareness while airborne.

Explaining what it feels like to battle the issue during competition, she previously said on the Call Her Daddy podcast: “It doesn’t feel comfortable, I have no idea where I am, but I’m twisting, praying I land on my feet.

“I felt like I was fighting my body and my mind to do these tricks.”
