Charles Barkley Challenges Network to Fire Him After Inappropriate Cardi B Breast Comment

Charles Barkley says he would welcome ESPN firing him after his on-air remarks about Cardi B sparked a backlash.

The Hall of Famer made the comment during ABC and ESPN’s coverage of Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden on June 8, as Inside the NBA served as the network’s pregame, halftime and postgame show for the series.

During the broadcast, the crowd included a number of high-profile names, among them Donald Trump and Cardi B. Trump’s appearance drew added attention because he became the first sitting president to attend an NBA Finals game.

Cardi B, a Bronx-born rapper and longtime Knicks supporter, also took part in the entertainment during halftime, performing for the home crowd at Madison Square Garden.

While recapping the first half, Ernie Johnson referenced the performance and joked:

“We’ve been competing with Cardi B here!”

Barkley responded with a line that quickly drew attention online:

“I don’t know about B’s! They might be Cardi D’s… I’m pretty sure those aren’t B’s.

“She’s got the wrong initials!”

The moment spread quickly across social media, with some viewers treating it as typical Barkley shock humor and others calling it an unnecessary comment about Cardi B’s body during a live national broadcast.

Barkley later addressed the controversy during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show.

Asked about the fallout, Barkley made it clear he is not worried about any disciplinary action from the network.

“Dan, you know I’m hoping they fire me. I got 6 or 7 years left on my contract that they know I’ve got no chance of doing. I would love for them to fire me and have to pay me for the next 6 or 7 years.”

He also said ESPN had not contacted him over the comments and doubled down when speaking about viewers who were offended.

“People can’t take a joke?” he added. “They can kiss my a**. I appreciate all the support I’ve gotten all these years, but if anybody thinks like them, they’re a fool. So if people don’t like me or don’t have a sense of humor, they can kiss my a**.”

Barkley’s remarks came during the first NBA season in which Inside the NBA has been distributed on ESPN and ABC while continuing to be produced by TNT Sports, a change that followed the NBA’s new media-rights era beginning with the 2025-26 season.

Online reaction remained split, with some defending Barkley’s sense of humor and others criticizing the comment as unnecessary.

“Only Chuck can say something that wild and still be loved for it,” one person penned on X.

Others were far less impressed.

“The man is a grown adult on national television reducing a performer to her body like it’s 1995. It’s not funny, it’s not clever, it’s just sad.”

The game itself was already one of the most talked-about nights of the Finals, with heightened security around Madison Square Garden because of Trump’s attendance and a celebrity-heavy crowd packed into the arena for New York’s home Finals game.

During the game, Cardi B was also shown courtside with her young son and later spoke publicly about the atmosphere in the building, saying Trump’s presence brought “dark energy” to the night after the Knicks’ loss.

As of now, there has been no public indication that Barkley will face any formal punishment over the comment.
