James Franco’s Bizarre TikTok Comeback Has Fans Wondering If Hollywood Is Ready to Forgive Him

James Franco has resurfaced on TikTok with a run of unsettling clips after years away from the center of Hollywood.

The actor largely stepped back from the spotlight after allegations of sexual misconduct emerged in 2018. In the years since, his career has shifted toward smaller and more independent projects, but a full mainstream comeback has remained elusive.

Now Franco has turned up again online, appearing in a string of unusual TikTok videos that have quickly drawn huge attention and fueled speculation about whether they are part of a stunt, a mental-health cry for help, or a deliberate attempt to reboot his image.

In the posts, he repeatedly wears the same blue t-shirt with ‘Bruce Robinson’ written across it in felt tip pen. He also writes his username on a piece of paper and holds it up to the camera, apparently trying to prove the videos are really him and not AI-generated.

Reaction from viewers has been split, with some doubting whether the clips are genuine and others expressing concern about his behaviour.

Speaking to the camera in one video, Franco says: “Hey guys, this is James Franco. Me, really James Franco. I’m here at my house. I’m not promoting anything, OK? I’m making this account because, all right, some serious, some serious sh*ts going on. OK, and look here, this is real. OK, I’m real. It’s me, not AI, not anything. OK? Could AI James do this?”

After writing the account’s username on a piece of paper, he continues: “This is me. OK. For those who know. All right. Some serious stuff going on; that’s why I’m contacting you, that’s why I’m doing this. OK? I know, I maybe seem crazy, like, why, what’s going on, what’s the gimmick? No, this is real. Real. OK, I can’t say too much right now. I just need you to follow me, then I’ll know who’s down, and I’m going to show you some crazy stuff. OK? Just follow me, I’m gonna, I’m going to show you.”

The account, jamesfranco2319, has attracted hundreds of thousands of followers despite having only a handful of uploads. Several of the videos have passed the million-view mark, adding to the sense that the actor has suddenly become one of TikTok’s strangest viral talking points.

Because of the urgent and paranoid tone of the clips, a number of viewers said they were worried and interpreted the posts as a call for help.

However, there may be a far less mysterious explanation. People looking into the profile noticed that it follows only two other TikTok accounts.

One belongs to Christian Guiton, the writer and director behind a film titled Love Meets in the Sunshine.

The second is the movie’s official TikTok page, which has led many to suspect Franco’s odd videos are actually part of a marketing push for the project. So far, though, there has been no public confirmation that the account is officially connected to the film.

Franco has not exactly disappeared from acting altogether. In 2024, he promoted the Italian drama Hey Joe, which screened at the Rome Film Festival and marked one of his higher-profile returns to the screen. But even there, he acknowledged that his relationship with longtime collaborator Seth Rogen was effectively over. Rogen has since made clear again that he has no plans to work with Franco in the future.

That makes the TikTok backlash especially loaded. For some fans, the videos look like an awkward attempt at reinvention. For others, they are another reminder that Hollywood has not really decided how, or whether, to forgive James Franco.
