Olivia Wilde Reveals Tom Cruise Comment After Jason Sudeikis’ ‘Traumatizing’ Custody Papers Ambush

Olivia Wilde has spoken candidly about the end of her long relationship with Jason Sudeikis, revisiting the public custody-paper incident that later prompted a memorable reaction from Tom Cruise.

Wilde and Sudeikis were engaged for seven years before separating in 2020. In her recent appearance on Call Her Daddy, Wilde said the breakup came after a painful conversation during a drive home on her 36th birthday in March 2020, when she says Sudeikis told her he did not know what to get her and, as she recalled, “I don’t know you.”

The two share two children, daughter Daisy, 9, and son Otis, 12. Even after their split, they continued living together during lockdown and tried to navigate the situation in a way that worked for their family.

Wilde said the pair were ‘great f*****g co-parents,’ but their post-split relationship faced one especially difficult public moment in 2022.

That year, while presenting the trailer for her psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling at CinemaCon at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Wilde was unexpectedly handed an envelope marked “personal and confidential” on stage. The envelope contained child custody papers connected to Sudeikis. At the time, reports said Wilde had no warning the papers would be served there, and Sudeikis later said he was also unaware it would happen that way.

The incident quickly spread online and drew a strong reaction. Speaking on the latest episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, Wilde said even Tom Cruise brought it up when they met.

“Hi, I’m Tom. F****d up what happened to you in Vegas,” he said when meeting Wilde for the first time.

“I was like, ‘No!’ I was like, ‘OK, so it went wide.’ Got it, got it,” Wilde recalled.

Wilde explained that at the time she assumed the moment would remain largely unseen because event rules did not allow phones inside.

Still, footage of the exchange surfaced online, and the clip gained major attention despite her initial belief that it would not become a big story.

“Jason has told me that he did not know, and I need to believe that in order to continue,” she told Cooper. “Lawyers can be super f****d up, and do f****d up things, and I’m aware of that.”

She continued: “I know it really hurt him to see that happen to me, I know he felt very very bad.”

Looking back now, the Cowboys & Aliens actor said she is able to laugh about what she described as an “incredibly traumatizing” experience.

Elsewhere in the same interview, Wilde also addressed her past romance with Harry Styles for the first time, describing it as the “loveliest relationship.”

She said she was surprised by the intensity of the backlash that followed, adding that the reaction to her dating Styles was especially harsh at the time.
