The 2026 FIFA World Cup has already produced one of its strangest viral moments after referee Felix Zwayer suddenly crumpled to the pitch with severe cramp in the closing stages of the USA’s Group D clash with Australia.
The United States Men’s National Team were on course for a 2-0 win over Australia at a loud and lively Lumen Field in Seattle on Friday, a result that ultimately sent Mauricio Pochettino’s side through to the knockout round.
Under the tournament’s expanded 48-team format, the top two teams in each group advance automatically to the round of 32, and the Americans made sure of that with a composed victory in front of a buoyant home crowd.
But with the match deep into stoppage time, play was unexpectedly halted after Zwayer appeared to suffer a serious leg cramp while running, abruptly slowing before falling onto his back in obvious discomfort.
The German official had spent the match constantly on the move in the demanding conditions at Lumen Field, where the heat and tempo of a World Cup fixture can take a toll even with hydration breaks in each half.

In a moment of instant sportsmanship, players from both teams hurried over to help rather than leaving Zwayer struggling on the ground.
USA striker Folarin Balogun and Australia midfielder Aiden O’Neill quickly attended to the official, stretching his left leg in an effort to loosen the cramped calf as medical staff made their way onto the field.
Following a nervous delay and applause from the Seattle crowd, Zwayer was eventually able to get back up, allowing the game to resume and the United States to see out the result after late substitutions that included Haji Wright and Weston McKennie.
It did not take long for the unusual moment to explode online, with fans turning the referee’s late-match cramp into one of the tournament’s most talked-about clips.
“Balogun and O’Neill dropping everything to fix the ref’s calf is the peak World Cup content I didn’t know I needed tonight,” one fan wrote on social media.
Another joked: “The running in this tournament is so intense it’s actively taking out the officials. Someone get that man a Gatorade immediately.”
While a third pointed out: “You know the match is physical when even the referee is pulling up with severe cramp in the 94th minute. Incredible sportsmanship from both sides.”
Meanwhile a fourth fan cheekily commented: “A Ref getting a leg cramp after giving a US player a Yellow card might be considered Karma.”
