Friends Mom Reveals Why Teen Was Left Alone on Island Before He Was Found Dead

Questions remain after 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells disappeared during Fourth of July celebrations on Horn Island, Mississippi, before authorities later recovered his body.

Wells, a wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, was last seen on the island on Saturday, July 4, around 3 pm near the north end. Officials said he had been with a group of friends on a boat trip to Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His body was recovered on Monday, July 6.

Authorities have said they believe Wells drowned and do not currently suspect foul play, but the investigation remains active. In an update issued on July 8, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said it ‘continues to actively investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Nolan Wells’, adding that deputies were ‘working diligently to determine exactly what occurred’.

Investigators also asked anyone who saw Nolan that day, interacted with him, or took photos while on the island to come forward, especially if those materials were ‘particularly those depicting alleged altercations or containing images of, or believed to include Nolan Wells’.

The sheriff’s office further requested information from anyone who may have ‘observed or heard an argument, disturbance, or other unusual activity while on the island that day’.

In the same statement, authorities said there had already been ‘a significant amount of information, speculation, and commentary’ circulating online, and stressed that they were ‘working to establish the facts through eyewitness accounts, physical evidence, and other reliable information’.

Officials have said they do not currently suspect foul play.

Speaking to ABC News, Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators believed Nolan’s friends ‘left the island and went back without him’. He added:

“From what we understand, he chose to stay there.”

Since then, the mother of one of the teenagers who was with Nolan that day has publicly addressed the situation.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Ashlee Cole offered prayers to Nolan’s family and wrote:

“No one in our family is trying in any way to impede with the investigation by law enforcement or to otherwise hamper the family and law enforcement’s quest for answers.”

She also said her son’s final sighting of Nolan was ‘at around 3pm on July 4th’.

Addressing why Nolan was allegedly left behind on the island, she stated:

“They left around 4:30 pm when the boat was taking on water and they had an issue with the bilge pump. Nolan made a decision to stay on the island and return inland later with another group of friends.”

Cole, who serves as a judge in Jackson County, said she ‘values transparency’. She ended her post by writing:

“My family is hopeful that this information will help to redirect the attention to the Wells family, their grief, and their need for our community’s support,”

On Monday, Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, also shared a tribute on social media.

“My heart is broken for our sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul.”

Nolan’s relatives have now retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who said on X that they ‘deserve the truth’.

He added:

“We will not rest until every fact about what happened to Nolan on Horn Island is brought into the light, and we call on investigators to pursue this case with the urgency and transparency this family deserves,”

ABC News also reported that Crump said an independent autopsy is set to be carried out in Washington, D.C., while other reports said an autopsy had already been completed on Tuesday, though the findings were not immediately released. Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. has said the cause of death is still pending.

Ledbetter also told the outlet that investigators were trying to ‘find the original poster’ of a social media video in which alleged arguing can be heard in the background. Authorities have not said whether the clip is genuine or connected to Nolan’s death.

Officials say the case remains under active review as investigators continue gathering eyewitness accounts, videos, photos and other evidence from the day Wells disappeared.
