Donald Trump appeared at Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final at New York/New Jersey Stadium, where he handed over the trophy to Spain after their win over Argentina.
He also greeted Lionel Messi and the rest of the Argentina squad while presenting their runners-up medals alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Once the match came to a dramatic conclusion, Trump stepped onto the pitch for the post-game presentation in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
Also taking part in the ceremony were Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, with Mexico having co-hosted the 2026 tournament. Even so, much of the attention was focused on Trump, including his exchanges with the players and what he may have said to them.
While he is not usually known for holding back, he appeared noticeably restrained on the night, with a lip reader claiming he repeated the same brief remarks to several players.

Nicola Hickling, of LipReader Ltd, on behalf of Covers.com, told the Mirror that Trump did not appear to tailor his comments to each player. Instead, she said he repeatedly told them: “You are a champ” before adding: “Amazing player.”
Although his comments were short and the medal presentation itself moved quickly, the spotlight returned to him when it came time for the trophy lift.
Trump, who was met with some boos as he walked out, was seen holding the trophy alongside the FIFA president before it was presented to Spain.
But rather than stepping aside immediately and allowing the Spanish team to celebrate their second World Cup title without interruption, he remained front and centre during the moment.

The 80-year-old stood in the middle of the stage smiling, instead of moving off to the side as Infantino did to give the players the focus.
At one point, he flashed a thumbs-up and was also seen doing his trademark arm dance with one of the Spain players.
Infantino eventually appeared to guide him away, allowing the team to enjoy the celebration on their own.
It is not the first time Trump has played a prominent role at a FIFA final. He also presented awards during last year’s Club World Cup final at the same stadium, another appearance that sparked a viral reaction from viewers.
For many watching, it was exactly the kind of scene they had come to expect.
