Jason Bateman has opened up about a wild night in Monaco that ended with his arrest for being “drunk and disorderly,” and reflected on the person who ultimately pushed him toward sobriety.
Speaking on his Smartless podcast, the actor looked back on one of the more chaotic moments from his younger years, explaining that his bad behavior once landed him in handcuffs after a night out at the casino.
The anecdote came as Bateman was revisiting the kind of hard-partying behavior he says defined a stretch of his early adulthood, years before his career resurgence with Arrested Development and later acclaim for Ozark shifted his life in a more stable direction.
“It happened to me once,” the star recalled on his podcast Smartless, as he detailed the moment police put him in handcuffs after a night in the casinos.
Bateman then described the incident in his own words, painting a vivid picture of the evening.
The 57-year-old explained: “I was arrested in Monaco for being drunk and disorderly in a nice little leopard outfit fresh from the casinos, all banged up on cheap champagne and a pocket full of chips. Just got rocked.”
Looking back on that period of his life, Bateman has acknowledged how different things were before constant online scrutiny and smartphones made every celebrity misstep instantly visible.
Previously speaking with the Hollywood Reporter about his antics, he added: “Fortunately, I was living at a time without social media and camera phones, so I got away with a lot, but it was definitely close a few time.”
Monaco, with its famous casinos and high-roller reputation, has long been a magnet for the kind of late-night excess Bateman was describing, making the story sound almost like a scene from a movie rather than a real-life run-in with police.
Years later, his life took a much more stable direction after landing Arrested Development in 2003, a role that marked a major turning point both professionally and personally.
Bateman has since said he stepped away from alcohol and drugs, with the exception of marijuana, and realized before hitting a devastating low that he needed to make a change.
Explaining that realization, he said:
“I’ve got friends who had bottoms that were pretty chilling, but I was lucky enough to recognize, ‘This is probably as far as I should go if I still want to accomplish the things that I want to get to’,” he said.
He also shared that his ambitions around family life and career helped shape that decision.
The star added: “I was conscious the whole time of wanting to get a lot of these boxes checked before I became a father and a guy with a career that I not only wanted but had a feeling I might be able to get it if I just got the right job.”
Even so, Bateman says the biggest influence in cleaning up his lifestyle was his wife, Amanda.
He said they had serious conversations about when the partying would finally end.
“Amanda and I definitely had a few negotiations about the point at which the [partying] spigot was going to completely turn off,” he outlined.
While it was not framed as an absolute ultimatum, Bateman admitted he understood it was time to stop postponing the inevitable.
And while abstaining wasn’t a completely deal-breaker, the actor admitted: “I was like, well, I feel like my sobriety ETA is six months away, but if I could land this plane now, it would alleviate a lot of the tension, so let’s just f***ing do it.”
His gratitude for his family was also front and center when he accepted the Actor Award for Ozark in 2019, using the moment to thank Amanda and their daughters for standing by him.

“I would like to say specifically though to my wife, my two daughters – Amanda, Franny and Maple – without you, none of it would be enjoyable and it probably wouldn’t be possible,” he said during the sweet acceptance speech.
