Christopher Nolan is often seen as one of Hollywood’s defining filmmakers, but Emma Thomas has been a central part of that success story, building an acclaimed producing career and substantial wealth alongside him.
Thomas has produced every one of Nolan’s feature films, a creative alliance that has lasted for more than 20 years and delivered over $6 billion at the worldwide box office.
Their story began during their first week at University College London, when they were both 18 and living in the same hall of residence.
It did not take long for their professional partnership to begin as well. Nolan brought Thomas into the university film society, where they helped organize 35mm screenings and used the money raised to support their own short films.
In the Sunday Times Rich List for 2025, Thomas and Nolan were reported to have a combined estimated net worth of £360 million, or more than $460 million.
While still studying, Thomas took an unpaid internship at Working Title Films. She later moved up to become a production coordinator before producing her first feature with Nolan, Following, in 1998. The film was made on a budget of roughly £3,000.
That early project marked the beginning of one of the industry’s most dependable filmmaking partnerships. Together, they went on to make Memento, Insomnia, the Dark Knight trilogy, The Prestige, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and Oppenheimer.
Although Thomas is most closely associated with Nolan’s films, her producing credits also include DC’s Man of Steel, where she served as executive producer.

Her producing work on Oppenheimer earned her the Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice Movie Award, making her the first British woman to win the Oscar for Best Picture.
Earlier in her career, she also received Best Picture nominations for Inception and Dunkirk. She additionally shared in Interstellar’s success when it won Best Visual Effects at the 87th Academy Awards.
Thomas has said that Oppenheimer may have been the boldest gamble of her and Nolan’s career, especially at a time when the theatrical business was still facing doubts after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I didn’t feel there was a guaranteed audience for this film,” she said. “I hoped people would feel they needed to see it in theaters, but many people still weren’t back post-COVID. And there’s the fact we’ve heard nothing but ‘theaters are over’ for a while now.”
In 2024, Thomas was made a dame for services to film, while Nolan received a knighthood in the same year. She has also drawn strong praise from collaborators, including Cillian Murphy, who described her work with Nolan as “the most dynamic, decent, kindest producer-director partnership in Hollywood.”
Thomas and Nolan married in 1997 and have four children. Their latest collaboration is Nolan’s The Odyssey, which opened to $264.1 million globally.
