Eight members of a family, including six children, were found dead Friday following a house fire in Grand Haven Township, Michigan, with authorities investigating the deaths as suspicious and noting that some of the victims had gunshot wounds.
First responders were called to a home on the 14900 block of Riverside Trail around 8:30 a.m. after reports of a smell of smoke in the area. Firefighters initially searched but found no fire and left the scene. About three hours later, around 11:40 a.m., dispatch received new calls about white smoke coming from a residence on Riverside Trail. Firefighters returned, entered the smoke-filled home, and extinguished the fire while searching for occupants.
“When they got inside, they noticed that there was several, numerous people deceased inside the home,” Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jake Sparks told reporters Friday evening.
The eight victims consisted of two adults and six children ranging in age from approximately 5 to 15 years old. All of the deceased are believed to be members of the same family. Their names have not been released as authorities continue positive identification efforts, though the sheriff’s office indicated the adults were in their 40s.
Sparks confirmed that some of the victims had gunshot wounds but declined to specify exactly how many had been shot. “I know that some had gunshot wounds,” he said. “I don’t know if there were other means that were used.” He emphasized that the exact cause of death for each victim remains undetermined pending autopsies.
Investigators have considered the possibility that the deaths could involve a murder-suicide scenario, but Sparks cautioned against drawing conclusions prematurely. “It’s too early for me to say that it’s a murder-suicide,” Sparks said. “I can tell you that that’s one theory that we have and we’re still looking to see if we can verify that.”
Authorities are not currently considering suspects from outside the home, though Sparks noted that this assessment could change as the investigation continues. He stressed that there is no believed threat to the public at this time. “We believe that everybody who was involved in the situation is in the residence,” he said.
Arson investigators from the Michigan State Police have been called to assist with the investigation. Officials are examining whether the fire was set intentionally, and the exact origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.
The scene has been described by Sparks as “complicated” and “complex,” with numerous detectives spending the day investigating. Autopsies of the victims were expected to be completed over the weekend, which may provide more details about the manner and cause of deaths.
“Bad stuff can happen in any community, and you know, this is a tragic event,” Sparks said. “No matter how you slice it, it’s a tragic event. I worry about the health and well-being of my responders that are out here too.”
Grand Haven Township is located on Lake Michigan, west of Grand Rapids in Ottawa County. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to gather complete information about the incident.
