Gavin Newsom’s tax returns reveal he has been earning millions each year

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s tax returns reveal that he and his wife earned between $1.7 million and $2 million annually during the years his finances were publicly disclosed, according to records made available before he assumed office and during a period of campaign transparency requirements.

The most recent completely disclosed returns showed that Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, earned $1.7 million in 2019, his first year as governor. This represented an increase of approximately $500,000 compared to their 2018 earnings, which totaled $1.2 million. In 2020, their combined income declined slightly to nearly $1.5 million. These figures demonstrate the substantial wealth the couple derives from sources beyond the governor’s state salary.

Newsom’s income is substantially supplemented by business interests held in a blind trust since he took office in 2019. The governor’s largest financial holdings include the PlumpJack Group, a wine and entertainment empire that operates wineries, restaurants, hotels, and bars throughout California. While the blind trust arrangement prevents the public from knowing which specific businesses gained or lost money in any given year, records indicate that his hospitality ventures provided approximately $800,000 in income during some of the disclosed years.

His wife contributes to the family’s income through multiple professional endeavors. Jennifer Siebel Newsom works as a documentary filmmaker and earned $151,000 in 2019 through her nonprofit organization, The Representation Project, which she founded in 2011 to combat gender stereotypes. She also earned money from Girls Club Entertainment, a for-profit film production company that she founded. By 2024, tax filings showed she received $150,000 annually from The Representation Project as its chief creative officer, while her company received an additional $150,000 from the organization for licensing fees related to her documentaries.

The governor’s state salary, which stood at approximately $201,000 to $234,000 annually during the disclosed years, represents only a portion of the couple’s total income. Additional earnings came from passive investments, business partnerships, and real estate holdings spread throughout California.

The Newsoms filed their returns jointly and paid substantial taxes on their reported income. For 2019, they paid approximately $712,000 in combined federal and state taxes. In 2020, they paid about $480,000 in federal and state taxes, representing an effective tax rate of around 32 percent. The couple also reported significant expenses related to their lifestyle, including hundreds of thousands of dollars paid annually for household services and childcare.

Tax records showed the Newsoms maintained a complex financial portfolio. They reported earning over $1 million from business entities and partnerships, held nearly $130,000 in capital gains, and received more than $440,000 in compensation from various sources during certain years. The couple’s real estate holdings included a rental property in Marin County that they leased out for $20,000 per month while maintaining residences in Sacramento.

Despite pledging during his 2018 campaign to become the first California governor to release tax returns annually, Newsom has not publicly disclosed his complete returns since March 2022, when he released filings through 2020 as required by state law for gubernatorial candidates. His office stated in June 2026 that it was “working to prepare” tax returns for years 2021 through 2025 to release publicly, though as of July 2026, those returns had not been made available.

The absence of recent disclosures has drawn scrutiny, particularly following reports that Newsom and his wife purchased a $9 million home in Marin County’s Kentfield neighborhood in late 2024. The purchase, made through an LLC created by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, coincided with a federal investigation into the couple’s finances. The Department of Justice has been investigating matters related to taxes and business income, according to multiple reports, though Newsom has not been charged with any crimes.

Newsom’s office has stated that the governor and his wife publicly disclose their income annually through required ethics filings known as Form 700s, which list assets and income in broad ranges rather than precise figures. The office contends that the couple has released every tax return filed while Newsom was a candidate for statewide office, covering tax years 2015 through 2022. However, observers have noted that these limited legal disclosures differ substantially from the comprehensive transparency Newsom repeatedly promised voters during his campaign.

The governor’s complex financial arrangements remain typical of wealthy politicians who maintain business interests while in public office. Yet the substantial gap between his $234,000 annual state salary and his total family income of $1.7 million to $2 million underscores the extent to which Newsom’s personal finances are tied to private business ventures and passive income sources rather than his position in government.
