Ocean swimmer Erica Fox was killed by a single catastrophic shark bite that fractured her pelvis and severed a major artery before she drowned near Monterey in December, according to a newly released autopsy report.
Fox, a 55-year-old triathlete, was reported missing after she failed to return with the swim group she co-founded, the Kelp Krawlers.
She had been far ahead of more than a dozen swimmers returning to Lovers Point beach in Pacific Grove.
Fox’s body was recovered by firefighters on a beach south of Davenport a week after she went missing while swimming on Sunday, Dec. 21, off Lovers Point, around the time a shark sighting was reported.
The autopsy report reveals the shark bite fractured her pelvis and severed a major artery before she drowned.
The findings came from a detailed medical examination.
The report, released late Wednesday, provides the fullest account yet of the attack.
Her husband spoke movingly about her life.
“She didn’t want to live in fear,” her husband, Jean-Francois Vanreusel, told the Mercury News during a vigil Sunday, a day after her body was found. “She lived her life fully.”
Vanreuse, who led the vigil to commemorate his wife of 30 years, said she was still wearing her white Garmin watch and a “shark band” was still attached to her ankle.
The electromagnetic shark deterrent had not prevented the attack.
The band is an electromagnetic device meant to ward off sharks.
She was a triathlete who completed two Half Ironmans and numerous other triathlons.
Fox’s father reflected on her character.
Erica Fox’s father described her Monday as kind, empathetic and disciplined. She and her husband have been together for 30 years, James Fox said. “Just an ideal person,” he said. “I’m not saying that just because she’s my daughter, but that’s the way she was — just a wonderful, caring person.”
Her fellow swimmers recalled her presence in the water.
“She made really hard things look easy,” said Michelle Polkabla, a massage therapist who treated Fox regularly and joined the Sunday gathering. “She knew the risks, but she just was a beast — so adorable and little, but all muscle.”
A fellow swimmer who survived a previous attack spoke at the memorial.
“I was also bitten by a shark,” Bruemmer told the crowd, “and I can tell you that it doesn’t hurt. I don’t understand why, but it’s not physically painful to be badly bitten. So I believe that in her final moments, Erica was not suffering in pain. And I hope that that can be of some comfort to people.” He paused and steadied himself on his walking sticks.
Meanwhile, authorities confirmed details of the fatal incident.
According to deputies, the coroner determined the cause of Fox’s death to be “sharp and blunt force injuries and submersion in water due to a shark attack”. The coroner said the manner of death has been ruled an accident.
Witnesses had reported seeing a shark near the spot where Fox disappeared.
A witness told police that they saw water splashing when the woman disappeared around 100 yards off Lovers Point.
One person reported seeing a “large splash,” per SFGATE.
Two people who witnessed the event told officials that the missing person may have encountered a shark while swimming offshore, officials said.
“Based on witness statements we believe a shark was involved,” Pacific Grove Police Cmdr. Brian Anderson said in an email.
The coroner’s office released its findings months after the discovery.
On Thursday, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office revealed the cause of death of Erica Fox. The 55-year-old went missing while swimming with a group off Lovers Point in Pacific Grove on Dec. 21.
Authorities conducted more than 15 hours of search operations, covering more than 84 square nautical miles, before suspending the search the following day. The woman’s body was recovered on Dec. 27 by Santa Cruz County deputies about four miles south of the community of Davenport, about 25 miles from where she went missing.
In the viral moment that shocked California’s triathlon community, Fox set out on a Sunday swim—the start of her weekly ritual with the Kelp Krawlers club she had co-founded two decades earlier.
The experienced ocean swimmer, who co-created the ocean swim group the Kelp Krawlers over 20 years ago, was swimming with a group of 15 swimmers.
Around the same time Erica was in the water, two witnesses on shore reported a shark sighting in the same area.
Pacific Grove Police Department Commander Brian Anderson told CBS San Francisco that they had alerted all the swimmers to return to shore, adding, “There was one swimmer who hasn’t reported back yet.” When the group of swimmers returned to shore, they realized Erica was missing.
The location has seen multiple shark incidents.
Fox’s death marked the third reported shark encounter at Lovers Point since June 2022, when another Kelp Krawler, Steve Bruemmer, was bitten and seriously injured while swimming.
Two months later, a paddleboarder and his dog were thrown into the water but escaped unhurt after a shark bit their board from below in the same area.
The surgeon who operated on him says the shark bite came within millimeters of severing a major artery.
“It grabbed me and pulled me up, then it dove me down in the water, then it spit me out,” he said.
Fox’s death marks the second shark attack fatality at Lovers Point in 73 years. The first claimed a 17-year-old boy who was swimming there on Dec. 7, 1952, the Mercury News reported.
“The Sheriff’s Office once again extends its deepest condolences to Erica Fox’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the agency said on social media.
