Young actress Sadie Sink emerged as a breakout star when she joined the cast of Netflix’s “Stranger Things” for its second season, which premiered on October 27, 2017. The Texas-born performer, who was just 14 at the time of her audition, took on the role of Maxine “Max” Mayfield, a tough and independent newcomer to the town of Hawkins, Indiana.
The path to landing this iconic role, however, was not straightforward. Sink faced initial rejection from casting directors who deemed her appearance too mature for the part. The character of Max was meant to be around 13 years old, and the directors expressed concern that Sink’s youthful appearance did not match what they envisioned. Rather than accepting the rejection, Sink refused to give up on the role, which she felt was right for her.
“I just begged and pleaded with them to give me more material so I could show them something fresh,” Sink recalled in a later interview. Her persistence paid off. The casting team eventually relented and invited her back for a chemistry read with fellow young actors Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, and Caleb McLaughlin, who portrays Lucas Sinclair. Sink impressed them during this screen test, and she was offered the role the following day.
Max Mayfield quickly became one of the defining characters of Season 2. She arrives in Hawkins as the stepdaughter of the abusive Billy Hargrove, played by Dacre Montgomery. Max’s defining characteristics were her love of skateboarding and her exceptional skills at arcade games, where she became known by the player name “MADMAX” after beating Dustin’s high score in the game Dig Dug at the Palace Arcade. Her red hair, skateboard, and confident demeanor made her an instant cultural phenomenon among fans.
Learning to skateboard was a significant challenge for Sink, who had lied during her audition process by claiming to have rollerblading experience. After being cast, the Duffer Brothers sent her a skateboard to practice with, but her initial attempts were fraught with difficulty. She took a hard fall on her first day of training, an experience she later described as setting “a bad tone for the entire journey.” However, Sink persevered and eventually became proficient enough to convincingly portray the character’s skating prowess on screen.
Before joining “Stranger Things,” Sink had already built an impressive resume. She made her Broadway debut at just 11 years old in a production of “Annie,” and had gone on to appear in television shows like “The Americans” and “Blue Bloods.” Her acting experience helped her navigate the complexities of joining an established ensemble cast mid-way through a successful series.
Max’s introduction in Season 2 added a fresh dynamic to the core group of protagonists. She quickly became part of the main party and developed a romantic relationship with Lucas Sinclair. Sink’s portrayal of the character’s toughness mixed with underlying vulnerability resonated deeply with audiences, establishing her as a fan favorite from her first appearance.
The character evolved significantly throughout subsequent seasons, particularly in Season 4, where Max dealt with trauma and complex emotional challenges. Sink’s performance during these later seasons earned widespread critical acclaim. Since her 2017 debut as Max, Sink has continued to portray the character through the show’s fifth and final season, which concluded in early 2026. The role has remained central to her career and has solidified her status as one of the entertainment industry’s most promising young talents.
