Donald Trump’s approval rating has fallen in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll, which also points to a notable shift in which party Americans say they trust more on the economy.
The survey was carried out from July 29 to August 3 and asked Americans whether they approve of Trump’s performance as president.
Just 35 percent said they do.
That is down two points from the same poll’s findings a month earlier.
Respondents were also asked which political party they think would do the better job handling the economy — Democrats, Republicans, or another party.
The result was especially significant because Democrats came out narrowly ahead, marking a first in this polling measure since May 2017.
Among registered voters, 37 percent said they would trust Democrats more on the economy, compared with 36 percent who picked Republicans.
Another 27 percent said they were unsure or would prefer a different party.
Reuters/Ipsos is not the only recent polling to suggest Trump is losing support.
An Economist/YouGov poll conducted from July 25 to 27 found that 62 percent disapprove of the job Trump is doing, while 34 percent of US adults said they approve. This represents a record low for Trump in that polling series.
A separate CNN poll by SSRS conducted from July 23-27 reported that 73 percent of US adults feel the president is not paying enough attention to some of the country’s biggest issues.
That same poll put his overall approval rating at 34 percent, with only 15 percent saying they strongly approve. The 34 percent approval rating marks Trump’s lowest in CNN polling since January 2021.
A Quinnipiac University national poll released on July 29 focused in part on US military action in Iran.
According to that survey, 74 percent opposed sending US ground troops into Iran, while 19 percent supported the move.
It also found that 32 percent approved of Trump’s handling of the presidency, while 58 percent disapproved and 10 percent did not offer an opinion. This represents Trump’s lowest approval rating ever recorded in Quinnipiac polling.
These latest polling figures come as Trump’s approval has trended downward throughout 2026. According to aggregated polling data, Trump’s approval average stands at approximately 38 percent, with his net approval rating at minus 20.9 points. His support among independent voters, at 34 percent, has fallen below the 36 percent threshold that preceded Democratic gains in previous midterm elections.
Trump later responded on Truth Social, where he addressed what he described as his “REAL polling numbers”.
In a post to Truth Social shared on August 3, he wrote: “My REAL Polling Numbers, not those made up by the Fake News Media, are the best they have ever been, and why wouldn’t they be with the biggest tax cuts and employment numbers EVER, the biggest outside Investment in America in World history, a totally secure Border, a giant Victory in Venezuela, the Denuclearization of Iran, unparalleled respect and success throughout the World, and much more?
“Don’t believe the Radical Left’s Fake Poll numbers. They are Crooked and Corrupt, just like the Country Destroying Dumocrats are Crooked and Corrupt. VOTE REPUBLICAN FOR GREATNESS IN AMERICA! Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT.”
Trump has made similar claims about his polling in recent months. Earlier in the summer, he posted that “MY REAL POLL NUMBERS ARE THE HIGHEST THEY HAVE EVER BEEN,” despite multiple independent polling organizations showing declining approval ratings. Political analysts have noted that Trump’s repeated dismissals of mainstream polling contrast sharply with the consistency of results across numerous polling firms using different methodologies.
