Travis Barker says he and Kourtney Kardashian shared their miscarriage story for a deeply personal reason

Travis Barker, the legendary Blink-182 drummer, has opened up about his decision to share a deeply personal moment with his wife Kourtney Kardashian on camera. In a recent interview with The New York Times’ Popcast, Barker explained why the couple decided to discuss their miscarriage in his upcoming Hulu documentary, Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear, which debuts August 13.

“When there’s things that can benefit people or help people relate to something, I think that’s always like a green light, especially she’s always trying to do something like that,” Barker said. “Our journey of miscarriages and then IVF and it’s like failed, resulting in us having a baby naturally, like I feel like that’s a story that so many people can relate to.”

The couple experienced the miscarriage in 2021, approximately six months into their relationship. The loss was particularly devastating, with Kourtney revealing in the documentary that they planned to name their baby girl Tulip. In a candid moment captured in the film, Kourtney described the emotional toll of the experience. “When we lost the baby, we were devastated,” she said. “We cried for days.”

Travis Barker revealed that he and wife Kourtney Kardashian decided to talk about experiencing a miscarriage as they believed it could be relatable for viewers.

The decision to include this deeply personal story in Barker’s documentary rather than on the family’s long-running Hulu reality series The Kardashians was deliberate. Barker explained that the documentary’s interview format made it easier for both of them to open up about such a difficult subject. “The way the documentary happens is through a series of interviews. I’ll say something, and then they’re like, ‘Oh, well tell me more about that,'” he explained. “And that’s how that came up.”

The documentary chronicles a challenging period in the couple’s fertility journey. After the initial miscarriage, they attempted multiple rounds of in vitro fertilization. Kourtney underwent five failed IVF cycles and three retrievals as they pursued their dream of having a biological child together. The emotional and physical toll of these treatments was significant, but the couple never lost hope.

Eventually, after stepping back from fertility treatments and putting their faith in a higher plan, they conceived naturally. Kourtney welcomed their son Rocky Thirteen in November 2023, a moment the couple has described as miraculous given their journey. “We were not trying whatsoever,” Kourtney shared, reflecting on the unexpected pregnancy. “I wasn’t even checking my ovulation anymore. We decided to put it in God’s hands and thought it was just not happening. We were accepting of it and then…God’s plan.”

The couple, who tied the knot in three different ceremonies in 2022, have become increasingly open about their fertility experiences. Kourtney has been transparent about how the pressure to pursue IVF at her age affected her mentally and physically. However, the decision to step back and allow nature to take its course ultimately led to their success. In a social media post in 2024, she wrote: “I stopped after a year of trying (five failed IVF cycles, three retrievals)…my body relaxed, and I believed in God’s plan for my life.”

Barker and Kardashian now oversee a blended family of nine children. Kourtney shares three children—Mason, Penelope, and Reign—with her ex-partner Scott Disick, while Barker has three children with his ex-wife Shanna Moakler: Landon, Alabama, and stepdaughter Atiana De La Hoya. In a February 2025 episode of The Kardashians, Kourtney reflected on the challenges and joys of blending their large family. “I feel like blending, in the beginning, is a lot of adjusting for each person,” she said.

The couple’s decision to share their miscarriage story publicly comes as part of Barker’s decade-in-the-making documentary that explores his life beyond his music career. Travis Barker: Louder Than Fear premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June and will be available to streaming audiences on August 13. The film features interviews with numerous collaborators and close friends, including his Blink-182 bandmates, as well as appearances from prominent musicians and cultural figures. For Barker and Kardashian, opening up about their fertility journey represents an effort to normalize these conversations and provide support to others navigating similar challenges.
