What was meant to be a quiet wedding in Madeira spiraled into a public frenzy this weekend when more than 2,000 football supporters gathered outside a church, mistakenly believing Cristiano Ronaldo was about to marry fiancée Georgina Rodriguez.
In reality, the bride and groom were Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira and Fabio Ramos, a local couple with no link to the Portugal captain.
They had travelled back from France to celebrate their wedding at Funchal Cathedral, but instead found their big day overtaken by crowds eager for a glimpse of one of football’s most famous figures.
After videos of the confusion began spreading online, Ronaldo also reacted to the misunderstanding.
Rumors had reportedly been circulating for several days that Ronaldo, 41, and Rodriguez were set to wed at the cathedral in his home region before holding a reception at the luxury Savoy Palace hotel. Speculation about a possible August 8 wedding date had been fueled by British media reports and reports of tight security measures at venues around Madeira in the days leading up to the event.
Although the couple, who have been together since 2016 and engaged since August 2025, had not publicly announced any wedding arrangements, speculation continued to grow. Prior to this weekend’s confusion, Ronaldo’s family members had also denied reports of an imminent wedding, with his sister Elma Aveiro stating that any wedding had been postponed.
According to the Mirror, the situation escalated when a grey Rolls-Royce arrived outside the cathedral and people rushed toward it, convinced Rodriguez had stepped out.
But the passenger was actually Teixeira, arriving for her own ceremony.
Footage shared by local publication Jornal da Madeira showed packed scenes outside the church, with some fans wearing Ronaldo shirts and many believing they were witnessing the football star’s wedding.
Ronaldo later responded to the viral video on Instagram with laughing emojis.
For the people actually attending the wedding, though, the chaos was far less amusing.
One guest summed it up by saying: “Fabio is not Cristiano Ronaldo. This is all crazy. We did not expect anything like this. I don’t think he is going to forget his wedding.”
Father Marcos Gonçalves, the parish priest at the cathedral, also stepped in to make clear that the reports were false, stating that only one wedding had been booked for that day and it had no connection to Ronaldo.
He also said he had no knowledge of the footballer reserving the cathedral for any upcoming ceremony.
Later, Funchal Cathedral posted a photo of the newly married couple on Facebook and acknowledged how extraordinary the day had been.
The cathedral wrote: “We never saw anything like this here at the cathedral. It was very complicated for the bride to enter the church to get married. Congratulations to the couple Nicole and Fabio. After a lot of confusion on the street with so many journalists and tourists, we finally managed to close the church and celebrate.”
At this stage, there is still no confirmed date or location for any future wedding between Ronaldo and Rodriguez. The couple has indicated that if a wedding does take place, it would be an intimate celebration rather than a large-scale public event, reflecting Rodriguez’s preference for privacy. Ronaldo previously indicated in interviews that any wedding would likely occur after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though no specific plans have been officially announced.
